Meet the Moderators: HerbalNurse

NursingLink

Hey NursingLink members! Wondering who might be able to help you with questions about our community? Need some one-the-job advice from a seasoned nurse? Well meet your new moderator HerbalNurse! We think Joyce’s positive energy will be a great addition to our NursingLink community, and we asked her four questions to help you get to know her. So without further ado, check out her responses and give her a warm welcome.

1. What kind of nurse are you and how long have you been a nurse?
In May 2011, I will have been a nurse 21 years. I have been an Oncology Nurse for 12.5 years, and Oncology Certified Nurse 11.5 years. I have been a  nurse wellness coach for two years, although my interest in integrative health has been for more than 30 years.

2. What’s the funniest patient story you have?
I had a cancer patient one time want to get out of going to court, so she came to my office and asked if I would write her a note that she had chemotherapy the day of court. Well, she either went to court, or not. But, chemotherapy wasn’t her excuse. I am sure that’s not the funniest story I have. I have soooo many stories. It’s the only one that comes to mind right now.

3. Describe yourself in three words.
Three words to describe myself: Integrative, caring, funny.

4. Anything else you want to tell us?
I am in the process of developing a nursing study to measure the effectiveness of a “tranquility room” for staff and patient caregivers on the Oncology Unit at our hospital. I have a deep interest in looking at the scientific efficacy of the non-invasive (aromatherapy, healing touch, prayer or meditation, etc.) on patient care. I am a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association.

    Thank you, Inara.
About a funny story, I did remember something that was great! I could have had a Jerry Springer episode "I was reunited with my ex in chemobay"...
The story is: I had several people scheduled for chemo that day. I had two new breast cancer patients. One in her 40's and one in her 70's. The room filled with patients, family members, etc. Conversation started between these two new patients. The older woman's son comes in, and it's obvious everyone knows each other. Well, the younger patient was finished with her chemo first and went home. Here is the rest of the story. The younger woman had dated the older womans' son several years ago. She get's pregnant, and tried to say the baby belongs to the older woman's son. The older woman had told her way back when in so many words to leave her and her son alone. Well, if you would see this woman's son now, he is the spitting image of the man she is married to now. So, well, we can assume he really wasn't the child of the older woman's son. ANYWAY... talk about a funny situation...
