5 Tips to Maximize Productivity in Nursing

5. Be proactive with needy patients

Another tip from Redding & Redding is how to deal with patients during hourly rounds. While it sounds like it might save time to only perform necessary care duties on a patient and then head to the next patient, that practice can backfire. How? The dreaded nurse call button.

They recommend that anticipating future issues by asking questions about food and water, bathroom needs/difficulties, and other common issues can do two things. First, if there’s a problem that needs fixing, a nurse can fix it immediately instead of leaving and then having to come back later. Second, the act of giving a patient what they deem to be extra attention can reduce stress and keep them from thinking they would be forgotten if they didn’t use the call button.
