Medical Wonders: Invasion of the Pollenbots

Medical Wonders: Invasion of the Pollenbots

Hassled by hay fever? If you lived in Tokyo, you’d have a new ally on your side: pollenbots.

Weathernews, a global weather forecasting company, is sending 200 ball-shaped robots into the air to monitor pollen.

Each of the ball-shaped pollen robots weighs 2.2 pounds and measures one foot across. The styrofoam shell encases a monitoring unit inside.

Electronic eyes inside come in five colors – white, green, blue, purple and red. Each color code means a different level of cypress or cedar pollen.

In Japan, 200 people have volunteered to host a pollen bot. Data from the bots will be uploaded 24/7, feeding a live pollen map online.
