9 Health Care Career Mistakes to Avoid
Laura Wisniewski | Nursing Voice
Mistake #4: Remaining in comfort zone
“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” – Brian Tracy
The problem with comfort zones is if left unchallenged they shrink over time. If something feels a little scary that is probably the best place to start. Think back over your life and career to times you stretched your self and succeeded. Growth can occur with small incremental steps. With each risk you take your comfort zone expands and so does your self confidence.
Mistake #5: Neglecting professional development
“Work harder on your self than you do on your job.” – Jim Rohn
We are now living in the knowledge age. The combination of experience, skills and education equals intellectual capital. Your intellectual capital is your most marketable asset. Keep your career portable. Document all that you have accomplished in a portfolio. Regularly update your resume and practice interviewing skills. Invest in your professional development by attending seminars, reading journals and books, networking at professional organizations and researching information on the Internet.
Mistake #6: Communicating ineffectively
“The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives.” – Tony Robbins
Communication skills are as vital as clinical skills. Are you able to effectively communicate with your team? How are your presentation skills? Can you capture and maintain the attention of decision makers? In order to accelerate your communication skills join Toastmasters International. Meetings are held at various times and locations in most communities. For more information please visit www.toastmasters.org.

I think ignoring trends in health care should be the first mistake considering the title of this article.Of course is very important to keep a balance between work and life style, but this something one should know to protect himself from a harmful imbalance.Having a masters in health care administration degree has made easier for me to keep up with the trends in the field.

You have a great article.I have a friend who would really appreciate your article because she just started to work at a Drug Rehab Florida center as a nurse.I guess we all do mistakes along time the only thing it matters from my point of view is if we learn from our mistakes and never repeat them.

I talked last week with a nurse from an oxycontin rehab about how she managed to become a nurse. The most frequent words in her story were planning and strong determination to succeed. I wonder how many nurses have followed the same approach.

I was just reading something about steroids when I found your article here. I have to say that planning is one of the key aspects of succeeding in your career. The second most important one is having a strong determination. Hope you agree with me.

I was just browsing the Narconon Vista Bay website a few seconds ago when I started reading this article. You make some very strong points here and let me tell you that I completely agree with all of the above.

Your advice here is quite good and it mainly refers to making the right choice and being very good at time management. Sometimes it can prove very hard to make the right choice, but if you manage with the second issue, I think that things will go on the right track. I work in a residential drug rehab and I can tell you that the advice you have here worked just fine for me.
