Top 10 Qualities of a Great Nurse
MonsterNursing.com staff
3. Empathy

Great nurses have empathy for the pain and suffering of patients. They are able to feel compassion and provide comfort. But be prepared for the occasional bout of compassion fatigue; it happens to the greatest of nurses. Learn how to recognize the symptoms and deal with it efficiently.
Patients look to nurses as their advocates — the softer side of hospital bureaucracy. Being sympathetic to the patient’s hospital experience can go a long way in terms of improving patient care. Sometimes, an empathetic nurse is all patients have to look forward to.

Great posting. I've only been a nurse for a short time, but it is easy to get burnt out. Especially when the flexibility quality is taken advantage of by your employeer.

Oftentimes, it is not the job per se that causes stress. Most people can manage the job stress. It is that compounded by the inflexibility of nurse managers/supervisors. So choose your job well and make sure it is a good fit for you.

Thank you for posting this, it clearly highlights the qualities of an effective nurse as well as provides a mirror for wannabe nurses to look at and see if that could be them.

Being a nurse is so natural for me as a mother of three children.
Happy to be on the right track!
This will help me to refresh and lift my spirit up to become a great nurse.

I like most of this presentation, and although I agree that nurses need to have all of these qualities, it makes it sound, in a couple areas, that nurse should also be like superhero....to me that is not realistic and not how we should spread the news of nursing.

after going through all these points I say YES, an excellent nurse needs all these qualities otherwise patients will never be satisfied with the quality of nursing care offered to them and when the patient is not satisfied, the nurse can hardly have job satisfaction.

i totally agree with this point of empathy. Putting oneself in the patients situation gives us a better insight into the patients problem and as such solving it becomes alot easier.
