5. Attention to Detail

nurse paying attention to detail

Every step in the medical field is one that can have far-reaching consequences. A great nurse pays excellent attention to detail and is careful not to skip steps or make errors.

From reading a patient’s chart correctly to remembering the nuances of a delicate case, there’ s nothing that should be left to chance in nursing. When a simple mistake can spell tragedy for another’s life, attention to detail can literally be the difference between life and death.

    SO TRUE!!!
Just an additional belief, when you save a persons life, they call you a hero.
when you combine science w/ caring, they call you expert
when you share your compassion, they call you friend
and when you do all these, they call you a
    NURSE....

I feel that most people who enter the field of nursing, already possess these qualities. However as with everything in life, fine tuning and years of knowledge and exposure shape them into usable attributes of ones character...

As a first quarter nursing student, I am pleased to see that our current curriculum addresses and actively opens the floor for discussing these very important attributes of nurses. I am very impressed with the list and, in particular, with the inclusion of the concept of "emotional stability". How true!

I think this list needs reviewed with all nursing students. I have worked with a lot of new nurses that don't even begin to hold up to this. Great list.

These are all very good points and fit my attitude of a good nurse, sometimes stress & other problems can interfer inhow you react on the job, so remember if you keep these points in your mind when things are not right they seem to help get through them & always try to leave your personal problems at your front door when you go to work, get in the right frame of mind before you start your day or night.

i agree with Nurse_dee some if not all of these qualities can be gained with training and practice.
that seems important to point out.

I hope that people thinking of getting into nursing who don't have all the qualities listed here will realize they will gain those (most of those) with proper training and practice!

Some of these, such as empathy and emotional stability cannot be taught, but can still be developed if the person is cognizant of the need to improve in these areas.

    It's all about attitude!
