5 Best States for Nursing Jobs

NursingLink.com and Careervoyages.gov

California

The Golden State may be sunny in disposition, but its number of employed nurses is bleak. There is an estimated need for 291,200 RNs, 64,800 LPN / LVNs and 83,600 CNAs ending in the year 2016. That is a total of 439,600 available nursing-related jobs in California.

This is especially true in the field of geriatric nursing. As the Baby Boomers age and need more medical care, the demand for nursing dramatically increases.

To help alleviate California’s dire nursing shortage, California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the California Nurse Education Initiative which provides $90 Million over 5 Years through a public-private partnership to reduce California’s nursing shortage.

“Nurses are people of compassion and courage. Their profession is a labor of love and without them we simply could not deliver quality care for patients. California is facing a severe nursing shortage and it is absolutely critical that we open up the nursing profession to everyone who has the passion and potential,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “With this new Initiative we are going to improve the quality of health care everywhere in our state. We are going to provide more classes, more teachers and more resources to expand the ranks of nurses in California.”

THIS IS BOLOGNA...I am from the Dayton area and I know NUMEROUS LPNs trying to find a job and I now live in Columbus and there are numerous RNs, I know looking for jobs in Ohio, so where do they get this info?

I agree with others.... where are these nursing jobs. They obviously did not ask any of the RN's or LPN's who are looking for work. I live in southeast Ohio and the jobs are few and far between. It took me almost a year to get a job as an LPN and that was only PRN. I am almost done with RN school and the job market is no better. I have friends who have graduated with a BSN and have been looking for 6 months plus.

Where did they get their ino for this article??? I am a June 2010 new grad in northeast Ohio. I have been searching for a job for the past 2 months with no responses. I've tried all hospitals within an hour of me and no one want new grads. Most hospitals won't even return messages. It's so frustrating
I started applying at nursing homes last week and finally got an interview... Not the best place for a new grad to get befinnig experience but what are we supposed to do ifno hosptals want new grads...hopefully things will get better in the next couple years.

TO ALL NURSES: This website's function is obviously to cater to employers hidden agendas by disseminating false information about the health care/ nursing market and pubblish very mushy subjects. I second the coleague who stated that the article (5 best states to work) rubs salt in our wounds. And if this is any consolation for new grads (it shouldn't be actually) experienced nurses with great resumes are also high and dry. But at least we can entertain some hope. Going back to the purpose of my posting: Check a good web site for our profession: allnurses.com It has depth and breath. It doesn't promote misleading information which can only help employers. If you want a forum to get united and take a stance to fight back for our jobs and earning power this is not it. By the way, just some food for thought: have you ever wondered why MDs are not unemployed and taking their hats off to employers begging for a job? Maybe that is because their leaders (unlike ours), their Association (unlike ours) did not allow for a glut of practioners in the job market like we, nurses, do by lying about nursing shortages, opening up more nursing schools, so we become a dime a dozen while employers and the American Hospitals Association rub their hands and grin with glee. Fight back brothers and sisters, write to your state reps, to the American Nurses Association leadrship even if you are not a ANA member, to your specialties associations. Nurses are the largest professional group in the US, 2.5 million strong, we could have a powerful lobying group working for us in Washington. Nursing can be a great profession but we must fight for it. And may the force be with us!

This is a truly misleading article and really rubs salt in the wound! There are NO JOBS for new graduate nurses in California. Most of the new grad programs have been eliminated (or my favorite, "postponed until further notice"!) or severely whittled down by the state budget shortfall. Thousands of new grads are applying for the same few new grad positions at hospitals. The only people I know who got jobs after graduating were those who already worked as CNA's at local facilities. Out of the 40 of us that graduated, that means only 3 have jobs. Even the skilled nursing facilities are overwhelmed with new grad RN's. If you are experienced and want to give CA a try, well by all means. As long as you have experience, they are hiring. The situation here is beyond frustrating. Now if we could just find someone to address the fact that no one is hiring new grads maybe we could get somewhere. If I could move out of state I would, but my husband can only work in LA or NYC- both states that are not hiring new grads.

There is absolutely no job in LA or NY. I'm a new grad and I called and applied to all tri state area. My fellow classmates who are lucky to get a job are the one who got connections at the hospitals. There are so many hospitals close down in the Tri state area for the past years. And a hospital that i used to work for before enrolling in nursing school just had a major lay offs! So I really don't see where exactly is the SHORTAGE! the shortage need to be shorter!!!

Very miss leading article and should be updated or withdrawn. My wife is a new grad with both RN and LVN licenses. She is limping by with underpaying agency jobs. THERE ARE NO HOSPITAL BASED JOBS FOR NEW GRADS. Don't bother coming to CA looking for a job.

I've relocated to CT from California as after 9 months of job searching I felt frustrated and disappointed and in addition my aging Mom, who lives here in the North East was needing assistance. Great time to come up with a new plan. If you can land a job there in CA, the weather is great, the outdoors fabulous, the pay is great although the cost of living is much higher as well . So I am with my family and regrouping. I have 30 years experience in health care, 15 as an RN (ADN)..Specializing in Hospice (who is always hiring) and Community Health, and Alternative Medicine. Id like continued time away from Hospice for a while and to try on something new in nursing. Several jobs I was qualified for experience wise, balked as I didnt have the higher degree, so I am considering more education to the Master's level so I can teach, which I'd love to do, and perhaps taking a nurse refresher course, or maybe Horticulture could be an option :) Id like to find a refresher that has clinical hands on experience. Any suggestions for economical education/refresher courses or other advice?

I don't know where you get these figures. West Penn Allegheny Health System just had 1,500 layoffs. Where exactly in PA are these nursing jobs? All I hear about are layoffs.

Leslie, I'm a December Graduate and I've put out my resume to every hospital in the area, have gone to several health care job fairs, have my resume on every site I could find, and I've yet to get as much as a call back!!! They tell us they need experienced nurses. So you have too much experience and we don't have enough!?!?! It's definetely an employer's market and we are at their mercy. Good luck to us all and the patients and fellow overworked nurses that are suffering because of this!!!

How would anyone feel if you have 24 years plus experience and hospitals will not hire you as they do not want to pay you for the amount of experience you have but would rather pay a new grad less..I have my resume up on 18 different sites and get a standard letter of thanking me for my interest in the company and nothing more after applying for most hospital jobs..No wonder there is a nursing shortage ...I am an RN with the specialty area of Pediatrics. Seems like they want more higher education that some of us cannot afford to pay...
