5 Best States for Nursing Jobs
NursingLink.com and Careervoyages.gov
New York
While the nursing shortage rages on in New York, groups are advocating for state funding of nursing degree programs and continued education. Although with increased advocacy, the shortage has also brought about higher salaries in an attempt to bring in more workers. The state of New York has also put together a task force on the future of nursing. There is an estimated need for 196,470 RNs, 55,660 LPNs and 112,450 CNAs by the end of 2016. That is a total of 364,580 nursing-related jobs that will need filling in the next eight years.

Actually there aren't really any jobs for new graduate nurses in California, that's why I volunteered for Connecticut drug rehabilitation after I graduated. Also, most of the new grad programs are "postponed until further notice" and thousands of new grads are applying for the same few new grad positions at hospitals. The situation can get pretty frustrating and if I could move out of state I would.

I agree with others.... where are these nursing jobs. They obviously did not ask any of the RN's or LPN's who are looking for work. I live in southeast Ohio and the jobs are few and far between. It took me almost a year to get a job as an LPN and that was only PRN. I am almost done with RN school and the job market is no better. I have friends who have graduated with a BSN and have been looking for 6 months plus.

A few months back I checked this list of yours and I must say it helped me a lot! I found a job at one of those community rehab programs and now I am a full time nurse there. Now I am looking for something to do in my spare time and I have come to check this post again for help.

I found a job in California at an drug treatment center and I am really happy about it. I do what I love and I take care of patients that cannot take care of themselves! It is really hard to work with people with drug addiction problems because you see how they destroy their lives for just another dose. Centers like these should be opened in more states nowadays!

I know what you mean by that but just think about it : non American citizens = low paid work force. I even took an Osha 10 Hour Training course as a nurse, just maybe someone will look at my CV and hire me but until this moment no answer. Until someone will contact me I'll work a clerk because I finished a nursing school to sell books.

I don't know what they mean by California having alot of nursing openings - I'm an RN with a Bachelor's degree and over 20 years experience and I can't find a job. True my background isn't perfect, but I've help many responsible, clinical positions within California and I rarely even get an interview let alone a job. It's unthinkable this should be happening especially when hospitals are hiring noncitizen nurses here on work visas but won't make every effort to hire our own RN's educated, paying taxes in THIS country.

I live in Jersey and graduated in January. Took my NCLEX-RN on March 2, 2011. I start looking for work this week and I have been told by many of the hospitals that they receive so many application for RN position that it is recommended to visit the hospitals at least once a month (to complete an application) in order to keep you resume on top of the pile. I guess I won't be getting a job any time soon. I'll trust in GOD that he will open one of those doors for me. Meanwhile, I'll volunteer with a rescue squad or something like that to halfway keep my skills up.

To the Author Kristina Cowan - Information is only as good as its reliable source!
I just read this article for the first time today and I did not see a date that is was created. Which I feel should be noted next to the title and author for professionallism. So I just want to share my comments that make this article pretty light in the loafers and realitively innacurate.
Providing graphics from Payscale may have enhanced your point of view visually, but if you notice the graphs do not support your specific statements about "median salary" If you say its $70,000 in New York and Payscale shows it as $62, 872, where is your supporting documentation ?? Who is correct? You? or Payscale?
Also, the California Nurse Education Initiative you quote as a being annouced as a 5-year program was ANNOUNCED IN 2005, and guess what, that deal is over now.
Please edit or remove this article if this information is no longer correct, current, or applicable now in 2010.
Thank you
