Honoring Civil War Nurses

National Museum of American History

The National Museum, part of the Smithsonian, recently unveiled a new exhibit, “So Much Need of Service – The Diary of a Civil War Nurse.” This is the real-life exhibit that corresponds to the online interactive website of the same name. See the actual documents created by Amanda Akin, who also had the privilege of meeting many other seminal figures of the Civil War: President Abraham Lincoln, photographer Matthew Brady and poet Walt Whitman, who also worked as a nurse during the Civil War.

The exhibit is on display through July 29, 2011.
