Honoring Civil War Nurses
Jennifer Fink | NursingLink

This Birth Place of Souls: The Civil War Nursing Diary of Harriet Eaton
This volume is an edited version of Civil War nurse Harriet Eaton’s personal diary and newspaper correspondence. Eaton traveled to Virginia after the Battle of Antietam to help care for soldiers. Her nightly journal entries, written over 11 months during two tours of duty, share the experiences of the Civil War nurse in a vivid, vibrant way. A long introduction by Jane Schultz, author of Women at the Front, helps put Eaton’s experience in context.

It didn't honor or support the confederacy but nursing on both sides and the bravery and precedent of what that means to us today. This is not a north vs south issue. It's nursing history, like it or not. Just like several things in our country's past (and dare I say present), there are shameful things there but it does not mean that some wonderful things can happen at the same time. There is no need to belittle your own profession's history here and certainly not to belittle the southern or northern women who decided that PEOPLE deserved care and compassion on the battlefields. I don't know about you but I am thankful for those on both sides who started ensuring more soliders survived and with better qualities of life. I know our military appreciates it then and NOW. Please learn to pay attention to the topic at hand instead of making everything an argument and causing dishonor to those who paved the way for how our soliders of today are cared for and how your career has been shaped.

The War Between the States was not about slavery so much as it was about States rights. Only about 6% of the population of the South owned slaves, and many Northerners owned slaves. So for you to be offended about the Confederacy because you are black, does not hold water. It was brother against brother, against the injustices of the northern states against the southern states in trade. I have been in the health care industry for 30+ years also, and I honor all those who have helped to improve our profession North and South, black and white. I don't think Clara Barton or Dorothea Dix cared if their patients were black or white or yankees or rebels, they tended to them in their time of need....as our profession is known to do.

As a RN of over 30 years, and as a BLACK WOMAN I did not appreciate honoring ANYTHING supporting the CONFEDERACY for obvious reasons.
