I am currently a nurse, and I must say, I have more work offers than I can take. There is no shortage in nursing from where i stand.

I agree with roadygrl's comment. I'M on this so called non existent waiting list, If you live in Miami they tell you that there is no waiting list, just a high demand and the number of student to be accepted per year is few.

I am just starting nursing school and yes it's a good time to get in, however you either need to pull off a 4.0 in all pre-requisites to get into a nursing program immediately, or be on a waiting list for 2-3 years (after completing pre-requisites). So you really have to buckle down and do well.

Healthcare is not just like anything else... ask an American auto worker or mortgage lender. Certainly there is no true recession-proof industry, but healthcare has proven to be as close as it comes --- even through mulitple recessions over the past 40 years. In the USA, nurses will continue to be in high demand for at least the next two decades. Perhaps census is down at the moment, but that will not / cannot last. We might put healthcare related items off for a little while, but only temporarily. However, I wouldn't want to be a cosmetic surgeon right now.

Nursing has its slow points. Hopsitals have a censusu as well as Nursing homes. If people have no insurance they don't go to the hospital quite as quickly. The census is down the economy is in the crapper, they make do with less. Just like anything else.
