How to Score in Your Nursing Career

How to Score in Your Nursing Career

Laura Wisniewski RN, BS, CIC

Professional certifications are highly respected in the nursing profession. They represent hours of dedication and commitment. Certifications are a method of validating your clinical expertise. Request information from nursing associations about the certification process. Obtaining an advanced degree is one of your most expensive career strategies. It will require significant planning and investment of time. However, advanced degrees are universally recognized, never expire, and once achieved can not be taken away.

As with any worthwhile goal, building a winning career will take time and effort to accomplish. Champions never lose sight of what they want or how to get there. May the best nurses win!

Career management is an important aspect of any job, not just nursing. It’s the only way you take stock of how things are progressing for you professionally and the actions required for advancement. As far as nursing is concerned, skill enhancement through an advanced degree could be the difference between a stagnant and a stellar career.

Agreed that not everyone has the luxury to give up their jobs and go back to school, but there can’t be much stopping them from pursuing an online nursing degree (http://www.independence.edu/healthcare/bachelors/nursing) to reach their goals. It’s a convenient way of advancing professionally without having to leave your job!

Mary would be my pick. Unfortunately, Karen's lack of enthusiasm to choose not to further her career knowledge without getting rewarded in some way, is her downfall.
