Now more than ever, it’s important to get the best bang for your buck. And there’s no question about it — when it comes to value, not every U.S. city is created equally.

Why chase a great salary if your rent swallows most of it, unemployment is skyrocketing and you spend two hours a day just to get to and from work?

So, which cities offer the most overall value in 2009?

Only the top 25 have made the list — and some may surprise you! After examining various city lists, weighing the rankings and taking note of our personal opinions, we’ve produced a list of cities that’s sure to offer something for everyone.

Our Criteria

We looked at cities’ growth rates, average salaries and costs of living.

We factored in average commute time — which, according to experts, has a colossal impact on your overall happiness.

We looked not only at unemployment figures, but also at the rate that unemployment has actually increased since February 2008.

Thinking of relocating for better job prospects? Need to compare two top contenders? Just curious to see where your city ranks? We’ve got you covered. Read on!

Start Here! City #25 >>

Dear Tania Khadder, Anna Hennings, Adam Starr, & Alice Handley: 1) Commute time is not listed as one of the top six happiness factors in the 2009 Gallup poll, so I'm not sure how someone can report that it has a "colossal impact" on happiness (see http://www.braincontour.com/2010/02/16/happiest-cities-in-the-u-s-2...). 2) Unemployment levels and nursing employment levels are loosely related. There is a national shortage of nurses. Which cities offer the best nursing opportunities? 3) Average nursing salary and cost of living should be reported on an indexed value; otherwise we are comparing apples and oranges. Cost of living actually takes into account all local salaries, but for a nursing list, it needs to be weighted for nursing salaries. In essence, the comparison is inapropriate and inaccurate, making the top 25 cities you reported also inaccurate. 4) The job growth rank you report is for all jobs. Florida, for example, has one of the highest nursing job growth ranks in the US (did I read that in a nursinglink.com article?), but no Florida cities are mentioned in your top 25 cities.

Is it appropriate for me, an RN, to ask you, reporters, to guard the truth as carefully as I guard the lives of my patients? I recommend researching your facts a little more carefully and using sources instead of relying on "our personal opinions." It's too bad that 80,000 people are now sadly misinformed.

I'm from Buffalo and living in San Diego Currently. I love the people in my hometown Buffalo. Real. Something u seldom get living out here in California. And there is a place for everyone of every income to live. No acting like u have money when u don't. Or rather a whole lot less than this place and wish i was back there. Cold. It was 90 the other day. I would live thru a winter to have extra money to travel and live life.

I''m also surprised although San Antonio and Austin are there, no Dallas as being one of the largest cities with one big medical center

I'm not surprised to see Austin topping the list! Although most people know it as the iconoclastic Texan city bent on "staying weird", there's a lot of down-to-earth goodness here that has earned Austin its title of a great place to live. Admittedly the traffic can be frustrating, but the bats are more interesting than fearsome. There are tons of cultural attractions like museums and plenty to do outdoors. I highly recommend looking into it if you haven't already. You can get travel rn jobs there and in San Antonio (#2 on the list, more than just the Alamo!) just to try it out.
