Kehinde. I am a foreign nurse/midwife from the Nigeria and I still don't understand why I am finding it difficult to get a job in the hospital since I became RN in the U.S.A by examination. Philadelphia would not hire RN without BSN that also made me me to go for BSN. I graduated from Immaculata University with bacelors and yet my story never changed. Right now, I am starting M.S in Midwifery this coming year January, I also could not get a preceptor. I do not know anyone that can help me into the hospital because I think the way a new grad. get hospital job is through friends and relation. Please, help me somebody, I don't want to give up my career. I am in need of hospital job and a preceptor for my M.S in Midwifery. God Bless you all. E-Mail: iteoluwakisi@aol.com

It may be true that hospitals may be hiring nurses, but check the requirements as many are for short term registry to fill gaps, and for experienced nurses. New grads should check into joining new grad programs offered by some hospitals---make sure there's an educator. I was hired by a hospital on a new grad program, came all the way from the Philippines to the US, and guess what? There was no educator, moreso, the manager was much to be desired. I had to learn from other nurses---not exactly an ideal situation if you'd like to really learn, but was lucky to have a few good nurse preceptors. So, new grads, don't get too excited in an interview. Ask the right questions. Usually not mentioned in interviews are "flex-time" and "Call-offs"---so ask for the hospital's policy on this because when this happens your time not worked is charged against your Paid time off (PTO), and if you've run out of PTO's, you just don't get paid. With this happening now during this economic crisis, nursing is not as lucrative, yet, it is better than not having a job at all. For those with comfortable lives who live abroad and dream of greener pastures in the US, make sure you know how green is green so you're not in for a surprise or a disappointment. Make sure, you have a great supportive management too so ask around before sign your name on the line. Good luck on your nursing ventures.

There are no available jobs to new grads in philadelphia health systems - the only new grads being hired, if any at all, are those who actually graduated from penn or jefferson. this article is incorrent - make sure to check hospital websites for the actual jobs they have posted. HUP only has positions currently posted for experienced nurses. i've been looking for 4 months and only now have had an interview in an ambulatory setting out in the suburbs.

I'm also a RN new grad and Chicagoi, Illinois is also having a hard time hiring nurses. Minor positions are open but they are all for registry. You probably will make more just working a regular non-nursing job. Spring graduates the most nurses so its tough. I thought this would be the only profession that it wouldn't be hard to get a job.

I'm a RN, new grad, in Ohio (as of Dec 08) and have been looking for a job since Jan. I was about to move because I could not find a job, in either Northwest Ohio or Southeast MI and I was willing to drive up to 50 miles in any direction. As I was starting to pack I got a job. It took 5 months. I have plenty of friends whom I graduated with who are still looking and they are not having any luck in long term care either. It's bad, we have hospitals closing whole floors and laying off nurses. And the ones who are hiring are doing so internally, Its rough, really rough.

This is very strange but I posted something earlier to the effect that these hospitals are all likley sponsors of Monster (parent of this site) and it was censured. Let's see if this is as well. Bottom line: a number of these places are clearly not hiring right now. This is a way for NursingLink (and MOnster) to ingratiate themselves with potential future advertisers.

I am in Arizona and going to nursing school. There are jobs here but yu can't expect to get the best shift. If you are willing to work nights you can find a job. Look at Yavapai Regional Medial center and come to Prescott.

We have a hiring freeze at our hospital in rural Arkansas. The local Community College will graduate approximately 50 LPN's the end of July and most do NOT have a job waiting for them. Most hospitals in AR are either instituting a hiring freeze, laying off, and/or taking salary/benefits cuts. I have 2 sister-in-laws who recently left travel nursing because they both couldn't find positions in the same area. They're back in Memphis, and only 1 has been able to secure a job. I left teaching because of school consolidations and lay-offs 3 years in a row. I was told nursing was a secure job. The last 2 months I've been sent home early and told not to come in on several scheduled days. SCARY! All the press about shortages in teaching and nursing is misconstrued! I agree that the skeleton-staffing is unsafe for patients and nurses!! It is wearing us out!!!

I'm a soon to be new grad too and most hoptials here in West Michigan are under a hiring freeze. Unless you already have a foot in the door in terms of being an aid while going to school a job at a hospital is hard to come by. The dean over the program sent a message to all the healthcare students saying look outside of hospitals for work because in a few years many nurses will retire. Many that currently are retirement age are staying on due to a spouse loosing a job.

I am not so sure that the medical/nursing has not been affected by the economy. I was laid off 3 months ago. I am an LPN with 30 years experience in ophthalmology, med-surg, and pre and post op assessments with IV skills. Most of my background has been in ophthalmolgist office . I was told "I don't have enough experience to work in a nursing home, and hospitals are wanting only RN's or Nurses aides. Help, I am caught in the middle of RN/Nurses aide. I want so bad to go back to school to bridge my LPN to Rn degree but I can't until I find employment....What does one do?
