10 Ways to Make Yourself an Unfireable Nurse

I’m not suggesting you work over your regular 12-hour shift. I’m not even suggesting you volunteer for services on your days off. What I am suggesting is that you be prepared to stay until the task at hand is finished.
In the past, you might have left work when your shift was up, just short of completing something (like charting — reasoning that you’d finish it up in the morning). Nowadays, it’s good practice to stick around that extra half-hour or hour it takes to get it done.
You may also consider coming in 15 minutes early so that you can get yourself organized before the workday begins. You don’t want to be the nurse who’s scrambling to get their patients in order.

I did every one of those things and was laid off after 15 years of loyal service at a community hospital. Sometimes it just does not matter how good you are. I was shocked and sorrowed to find out I ws more loyal to my job than my employer was to me. It was just about money.

a great attitude makes for a great employee. I make sure they KNOW I can be called in a pinch or when I am off I am willing to pitch in. THEY KNOW I will do my part without complaining. I am NO real life angel...but I can be depended on and will always do extra when asked.I got a personal "Thank You" for working for us card from the owners....and that is very rewarding and worthwhile. Be nice to EVERYONE...you never know who someone is!! I have even had other jobs try to "poach" me when I am in the field b/c I was nice to a stranger...one of the hiring mgrs unbeknownst to me!! No matter how onery someone is...kill them with kindness :)

Another tip related to Nursing is to take preceptor training where available and be a preceptor and mentor for new hires. Also, don't get caught on NursingLink at work ;)

#4 is especially "spot on". With layoffs and hiring freezes, having admin recognize your leadership qualities opens the way for potential promotions. Never hurts to be the "go to" guy or gal.
