Hospital Personalities of the Year

Attending Physicians

Regardless of their specialty, these are the men and women who stride through the halls in professional dress (or, at the least, business casual). They look well rested and are generally fit and well nourished. After a few years’ experience, you’ll be able to differentiate psychiatry attendings (comfortable shoes, dangly necklaces) from orthopedic attendings (cowboy boots, bags of Cheetos in their pockets) from internal medicine attendings (silk ties, expensive heels). Please note that in teaching hospitals, these are the people with either no white coats at all or very long white coats, usually with frog closures rather than buttons.

I would also mention among the hospital personalities of the year, Dr K Bharadhwaj from the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, where a freak fire accident killed three patients last week. Dr. Bharadhwaj said that a busy night in the ward had prevented them from noticing the fire, which is believed to have originated from the air conditioner above the Skytron table in the operating room. He first ensured all those who were able to walk were safely shifted from the ward and then returned to the smoke-filled room and tried to save Krishna Bai but it was too late. He acted like a hero and a doctor at the same time and I think he deserves our praise.
