5 Shocking Stats About Doctors

#3: Doctors Cover For Each Other

When someone’s life and well-being is placed into the hands of doctors, those doctors have the grave responsibility to do everything in their power to heal that patient. But not everyone is perfect — we all make mistakes.
Working in a medical setting, it’s common for the staff to keep a close eye on each other to ensure all of the patients are safe and being treated properly. Like the whistle blower nurse who was acquitted of the felony charge for reporting a doctor, staff should certainly keep each other in check.
And most doctors would agree — 96% of doctors agree they should report impaired or incompetent colleagues or those who make serious mistakes. But the crazy part is that regardless, 46% of them admit to having turned a blind eye at least once.

The washing of hands is not shocking at all. We have constant "hand washing audits" which is someone who looks like a visitor observes if the staff wash hands. CNA's, Lpn"s and RN's always score in the 98% or above, while Dr's consistantly score in the low 60%

I'm so not shocked by this. Many Dr's are dishonest and like to play the blame game when they make a mistake. That is why I always tell my fellow nurses to document and cover their rear end when it comes to conversations with Dr's regarding there patients. I have also documented in the past of Dr's not washing their hands when dealing with infected patients.

No I'm not shocke at all, I work in a healthcare system and I have seen doctors going in and out of patient's room without washing hands, so it's not surprising. Also, there is a saying which says "do what I say but don't do what you see me doing", I guess this applies to so many people including doctors; afterall they are human.

Most clinicans aren't that naive I usally use my samples for my clients who either can't afford or wouldn't have time to get a refill before they need to start. laurielangarnp

What is the point of your ridiculous article??? Why don't you spend your seemingly invaluable time investigating the real cause of disease in America ...... the big corporations like Monsanto and their patents of bioengineered seed which has led to "genetically" altered foods that poison us,,,,and while your at it you could investigate the IRS for charging "income tax" something not found in our constitution or you could take on the corrupt politicians in every arm of our government stealing billions of dollars from taxpayers.
I am sure you would have a field day with these; genuine sources of the blackest of plagues. I for one applaud our doctors ,

Ms Kim,
I assume you consider yourself a "writer" or perhaps even a "journalist"?
I suggest you contact TMZ or STAR magazine for your next gig.

While bringing to point some important issues, I agree the article was a bit hateful. Rather than focusing on the faults of our colleagues, perhaps we should evaluate ideas for improving such situations. For instances, many hospitals have incorporated the role of a hand washing hall monitors on their floors. They keep record of who and who is not following hand washing policy. This way retraining efforts can be implemented to ensure the best safety practices are being followed. As far as hand outs from pharmacies to prescribing physicians, the issue certainly needs to be addressed. It is reprehensible to imagine any medical professional prescribing or otherwise treating any patient based on a shady financial obligation to a pharmaceutical company. This is a dangerous practice with little regard for the patient's best interest or safety. Although, I have heard of many doctors out right refusing to accept any such pharmaceutical bonuses. These rogue doctors need to be commended, celebrated, and revered as professional role models and true patient advocates. In the future, I hope to enjoy articles that highlight the innovative ways nurses can positively address similar problems in their communities rather than being subjected to an article that fosters negativity while at the same time driving the wedge deeper between doctors and nurses.
