Disaster relief nursing allows licensed nurses to utilize their medical skills in the event of a disaster. For days, or even weeks, at a time, nurses help to care for the victims of disasters like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, attacks like The World Trade Center bombing and 9/11, and the recent Midwest floods. Volunteer service is exhausting, rewarding, and potentially dangerous. For those up to the challenge, disaster relief nursing can be one of the best experiences of your career.

How Do I Get Trained?

Many disaster-relief organization offer training programs. If you live in a state that has recently been affected by a disaster, your state government may also offer training classes. Local organizations like schools and churches may also hold training classes, as well local hospitals.

The American Red Cross offers specific training for disaster relief nurses. Contact the your local Red Cross chapter, or the chapter located in the area you will to serve, to find out when the next training will be.

Training is not always required, but if you are serious about disaster relief nursing, it can help you perform your duties and teach you to handle these unique, demanding situations.
