10 Ways to Lose Your Nursing License
NursingLink
Although we would like to believe that every nurse is a good person with good intentions, we can’t ignore the fact that every year, state nursing boards revoke dozens of licenses. While some of these men and women lose their ability to serve as nurses because of non-nurse related activities, others suffer the consequences of patient endangerment or worse. The threat of having your license revoked is ever-present, and it is important to know just what activities can take it away.
Of course, there are many more reasons your nursing license may be revoked, and the decision is ultimately up to your state board. Be sure to regularly familiarize yourself with your state’s laws and procedures.

i agree with the article completely ... I have worked with nurses that have a alcohol problem many times. I have even had a cena come to work smelling of alcohol and was terminated the same day .. i have never taken my pain medicine and went to work .. i always waited until after work to take it and made sure that it was out of my system before i went to work My patients safety has always been of the highest prioity ..... anyone that would take something from a patient needs to have counseling to begin with

I must say I am a bit shocked at these comments I am reading.
There seems to be a lot of concerned people....concerned about them selves.
Do you not see the reasoning behind these articles?
We...all nurses are to keep are pt. free from harm...Safety is always first on our watches.
So I highly agree..that a drug addicted nurse should not be on the floor...
If she cant take care of herself, than she is unable to put the pt. first.

if a nurse condones the behavior of a rapist and allows him back into the house with her minor children ranging from the age of 17 to 13, is that considered negligence? or putting the welfare of minors in danger? would she be held responsible for anything that should happen to those kids? and would that be grounds to have her lisence as a professional taken away?

I am an LPN and have been for 30 years. Last June I received a certification that was very difficult. A resident (of sound mind) gave me a card with money in it. 5 Months later I was fired from my job for excepting a gift from a resident. I have been turned into the State Board of Nursing and am now waiting to see what happens. I am devastated and very sick about all of this. I loved my job and was good at it. Now I am on the job hunt. Beware: NEVER except a gift from any patients or their family.

I have an LPN (young) under my supervison at a methadone clinic. She is spectacular when she has not been drinking the evening before. Approximately 5 different times she was a no show for work, calling in sick, can't find my car keys, my roommate locked me out, food poisoing, all the excuses, also several times shows up to work with etoh odor on her breath and two times it was noted by staff she was still under the influence. She is responsible for dosing methadone, making fatal medications errors. One would thing a profession such as nursing takes pride in the profession and her work...so although placed on probation she continues to test the limits of our recovery agency....I have read many comments on the site and please ....do nurses need a wake up call when thier private life runs over into work and they are responsible for a fatal medication error. Interested in your nurses code you take.

I am wondering why it is okay for people do some items apart from Nursing like be a part time drag racer which can ultimately lead to death and still keep their License, but it you open a porn web site that is legitimate you can loose it? What's next if you smoke you can't be a nurse?
Just wondering who gets to decide these things?

I forgot to add- in case anyone didn't catch I was being facetious about a job on a porn site. I guess I will have to wait until I am retired to have controll over my private own life. My true feelings are " If I am not breaking a law an dit doesn't interfere with my nursing duties- stay out of my private life!" If any of you nurses go out dancing or drink and or smokeand are single , and are seen talking or dancing with one or more partners- you better stop all of it because if a patient who is out doing the same thing sees you (s)he might think you are some may label you as a tee-totalling drunken , lap dancing floozy!!! You may lose your job and license- Didn't you know that enlisting in the nursing profession requires you to only obtain pleasure and joy from Nursing- Becareful Big brother board is watching- So dont even think it- I know this is more "1984" -Slippery Slope logic. Do you wish to completely trade your being an individual, a person , a human in exchange for nursing profession ? I think many of us are nurses- not nuns and priest- Please dont send me to the inquisition board!!!!- Lighten up-Please!!!

What you do at home and in your life is on you. As long as it is not nursing related or unlawful I dont see how this can stand up.

Was she representing herself as a nurse on her website? If she was, well then ... I can see why her behavior could be considered detrimental to the profession of nursing. But if her website had nothing at all to do with nursing ... I feel it is unfair and unconstitutional for her to be punished. If her career as a nurse and her personal desire to host a pornographic website had nothing to do with each other, she should have been left alone.

All of us/you who believe that our private lives are no ones business, you are right, I side with you on that, but, we are also taking offense that someone may be controlling our freedom, freedom of speech and so n, but come on, face it, nursing is a respectable profession, the public want to know that someone in good moral standing are taking care of their family members, not a drug dependant person who may claim to have given a pain ridden patient their medication and in all reality slipped it into their own pocket for later, you know this happens, as for a second job to fall back on, well there are a whole heck of alot "other" repectable jobs to go into, with the sexual assult rate climbing, no family member/employer wants to find out that again, their nurse is a porn star...so come on, think outside of the box here, lower the defense and see it for what it really is, if you want to do drugs, act out porn and etc....go into another business/proffession, the public needs to know they have health providers and givers they can trust
