It may be true that hospitals may be hiring nurses, but check the requirements as many are for short term registry to fill gaps, and for experienced nurses. New grads should check into joining new grad programs offered by some hospitals---make sure there's an educator. I was hired by a hospital on a new grad program, came all the way from the Philippines to the US, and guess what? There was no educator, moreso, the manager was much to be desired. I had to learn from other nurses---not exactly an ideal situation if you'd like to really learn, but was lucky to have a few good nurse preceptors. So, new grads, don't get too excited in an interview. Ask the right questions. Usually not mentioned in interviews are "flex-time" and "Call-offs"---so ask for the hospital's policy on this because when this happens your time not worked is charged against your Paid time off (PTO), and if you've run out of PTO's, you just don't get paid. With this happening now during this economic crisis, nursing is not as lucrative, yet, it is better than not having a job at all. For those with comfortable lives who live abroad and dream of greener pastures in the US, make sure you know how green is green so you're not in for a surprise or a disappointment. Make sure, you have a great supportive management too so ask around before sign your name on the line. Good luck on your nursing ventures.

I'm also a RN new grad and Chicagoi, Illinois is also having a hard time hiring nurses. Minor positions are open but they are all for registry. You probably will make more just working a regular non-nursing job. Spring graduates the most nurses so its tough. I thought this would be the only profession that it wouldn't be hard to get a job.

I'm a RN, new grad, in Ohio (as of Dec 08) and have been looking for a job since Jan. I was about to move because I could not find a job, in either Northwest Ohio or Southeast MI and I was willing to drive up to 50 miles in any direction. As I was starting to pack I got a job. It took 5 months. I have plenty of friends whom I graduated with who are still looking and they are not having any luck in long term care either. It's bad, we have hospitals closing whole floors and laying off nurses. And the ones who are hiring are doing so internally, Its rough,really rough.

I am in Arizona and going to nursing school. There are jobs here but yu can't expect to get the best shift. If you are willing to work nights you can find a job. Look at Yavapai Regional Medial center and come to Prescott.

I'm a soon to be new grad too and most hoptials here in West Michigan are under a hiring freeze. Unless you already have a foot in the door in terms of being an aid while going to school a job at a hospital is hard to come by. The dean over the program sent a message to all the healthcare students saying look outside of hospitals for work because in a few years many nurses will retire. Many that currently are retirement age are staying on due to a spouse loosing a job.

As an experienced nurse of 15 years, and from travelling around the country, I can say that there still is a nursing shortage. But because of the economy, the hospitals are going with skeleton staff-which makes it unsafe for the nurse and the patient. Not a good thing. As hospitals are figuring out that this is not working, slowly more jobs are opening up, even for travellers, as I have researched.

I don't know about anywhere else, but there are absolutely no job for RNs in BOSTON, MA. i would like to know where they get that info.
