9 Ways to Wake Up Earlier for Your Morning Shift
Tania Khadder
![]() |
Apparently, based on your chronotype, you will be more naturally alert earlier or later in the day. And your type may dictate when and for how long you sleep. But while a natural variance in sleep patterns is natural, it appears that the early bird is indeed the more coveted of the species.
We’ve heard it time and time again: most CEOs wake up before 6am. It’s often said that the most successful people are early risers – and it makes sense. Chances are if you get up early you spend less time sleeping, which frees up more time for other, more productive activities.
In addition, the early morning is often the time of day you have most control over. Unlike later in the day, very little happens between 5am and 8am that can throw a wrench in your plans.
But how does one go from night owl to early bird? And can you?
The truth is, no matter what your natural rhythm, many people have been able to train themselves to become early risers and/or need less sleep. We’ll show you how.

I m also wondering like u Geanna where she got her research from. She is asking to train yourself to less sleep: 6 hrs.We all need enough sleep for number of reasons.Y to cut down on sleep. What is more productive than sleeping -a cup of water or coffee or making yourself to pee after gulping glasses of water. There has to be enough reason n motivation to get up- like i have to be at work by 7,i cant afford to be late,i don want to sit in traffic ....so i better get up in time no matter what.

I wonder who the author of this article is or where she got her research, if any. The main thing that I do not like about this article is the statement that you could be doing something more productive than sleeping. Sleep is health maintenance and not getting enough can be linked to a myriad of problems later, such as obesity and depression. I don't think that people should be made to feel guilty about sleeping or 8 or even 9 hours of sleep if that is what they need. Some of the getting out of bed tips were good. As far as insomnia goes, here is my own tip. I let go of my need to sleep. I watch for and avoid the obvious triggers like caffeine and late work outs but sometimes something will sneak in, like stress and keep me from sleeping. If it is an identifiable problem I write it down and promise myself I will address it next day. If it is not identifiable I push it aside and try to get some sleep. If I can't sleep, I do something else. But I do not, absolutely do not look at the clock. I do not dwell on how much sleep I got nor how much I am missing. I just go on through the day and try to do better the next night. Sleep! It does a body (and mind) good.

Good article! My problem however is falling asleep. No matter how late I retire I wake up early, then I want to go back to sleep in the middle of the day. My old tricks no longer work. Any suggestions?

Very good article...going to look for that clock, among other things. Working noc shifts for too long has RUINED my sleep pattern! (My doc says I have "poor sleep hygiene"...remember that from school?!?)

I'm the same...I'm definately a night owl, that's why staying up during 6 hr lecture and waking up early for clinicals are making my life in nursing school so, miserable...But I'm still hanging in there one more year I'll be done and I can finally work my night shift!!!yeah!!!I think I've tried everything to fix my sleep pattern, but nothing seems to work....grrrr

The glass of water tip wakes me up...but in a different way. It makes me have to urinate in the morning.
