5 Nursing Stereotypes Debunked
Hamsa Ramesha | NursingLink

The nursing profession has patiently endured some of the most defining stereotypes – many of them gender-related. From typecasting this career of care as female-only, to belittling nurses as wannabe doctors, there are few mistruths nurses haven’t heard.
Some of these traditional stereotypes may have been true once upon a time. But like most stereotypes, most of these ideas are outdated and silly.

I'm a big fan of Ultimate Fighter. During one of the episodes, Josh Koscheck, one of the fighters, tried to get under one of the male medics skin by teasing him and comparing him to a male nurse. Josh Kosheck thinks he is so superior because being a male nurse is such a feminine position. He is such an ignorant piece of crap. Anyways, I've received lots of support from my family, friends and fellow nursing students for joining the nursing profession. Proud to be male nurse and to challenge the stereotype.

I am always happy to encounter and work with male nurses. Male nurses enhance the nursing profession by boosting professionalism, pay scale, attitude, and by providing a different prospective. Also, while I probably have worked with gay male nurses, most of the male nurses I have worked with are married men with families. We need to work harder at countering negative stereotypes of nurses and nursing.
