A profession facing a predicted personnel shortage of 1 million by 2012 tends to get creative about helping career changers break into the field. That’s exactly why diverse educational options are available to mid-career workers who want to switch gears and pursue a new career in nursing.
“The variety is needed to avoid duplicative education efforts on the part of second-career students and to feed the nursing pipeline,” says Susan Odegaard Turner, Monster’s Healthcare Advisor and a nurse with 30 years of wide-ranging experience in healthcare.

The LPN/LVN Path
With at least a high school diploma, you can obtain one year of training at a hospital, vocational-technical school or community college and become a licensed practical nurse (LPN), known as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) in some states.
But know in advance, Turner says, that as an LPN/LVN you’ll be limited in the on-the-job activities you can perform. Equally important, she says, is the fact that you’ll likely earn $10 to $15 an hour less than registered nurses (RNs), whose practice scope is wider. “An LVN is a great stepping-stone to RN, but the roles are not interchangeable,” she says.
Once you finish your training, you’ll need to pass your state-administered National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to obtain your LPN/LVN license.

I have some feed back for you in hopes it may help resolve your problem down in Virginia. You stated you are from Michigan I also am from Mi , wondering if you were a certified CNA in Michigan because if you were certified you can call Prometric phone number is 800-752-4724 and providing your certification has no marks on it you can apply for a dual cena certification card which will allow you to work in other states. I moved to Ohio for a while and that is what I done there is no fee for this. I was not sure if you are a certified cna. or what but, sounds like you have a lot of medical experience behind you take it from me move on to the next level as I have been a cena for 32 years. It is truly rewarding but very hard work I am 55 and researching nursing programs. The card you9 need to get is called a reproscidy card not sure on the spelling sorry! Hope this may be of some help to you if not you can always seek training for cena usually long term care facilities offer it or a community college. Good Luck

i am a 44 yr. old female, that currently reside in Virginia.. I am orginally from Michigan. I do not know where to start here, I have worked as a Medical Assistant, Patient Care Associate, EKG Technician, and went to school for Basic EMT Technician. I really, really, want to become a RN.. I have been in the health care field much of my life. I cannot work as a CNA here because you have to be cerified in VA. What can i do to get started? Is there is a test that i can take for cerification? Can i apply any of my previous job towards any nursing courses? Once i get into a program it will be a breeze since i have so much experience in the medical field...somebody help please???? Lost in Virginia
