In Her Own Words: A Nursing Student's Story

In Her Own Words: A Nursing Student's Story

What do you think will be the most challenging thing about nursing school?

I believe the most challenging thing about nursing school will be the fast passed quality of the program. I will be learning everything in a year’s time and I will have to be motivated to stay focused.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I see myself working in labor and delivery and hopefully starting my own family. There is also a possibility, after I have had some floor experience, of continuing my education to become a Nurse Practitioner.

What are you looking forward to in nursing school? What are you dreading?

I am looking forward to continue my education and to achieve my goal. I am dreading is the accelerated nature of the program but this is something that I will have to manage.

What do you know now; that you wish you knew before you applied to nursing school?

If I would have done it all over again, I probably would have went to a four-year program to get my R.N. instead getting a degree in Biology. But at the time I was still young and did not know what I really wanted to do in life. It was through college experiences that I was able to find out. This is a great program to get people into the field of nursing. It is a lot better than starting all over again. I am excited and thrilled that I have this opportunity.

How difficult do you think it will be to find a job after you graduate? How will you go about looking for your first job?

Since there is a nursing shortage, I do believe it will not be very difficult to find a job after I graduate. Kaiser Permanente offers some individuals a scholarship as long as they work [for Kaiser] for two years. I plan on applying for this scholarship along with other possible scholarships.

Congradulations Erin! Your story is very inspiring for me, and it really makes me push myself even harder to achieve my goals of becoming a nurse. I am currently in an accelerated LPN program, upon graduation I will be enrolling in Indiana State Universities Online LPN-BSN Program. Things are diffucult at times since I work full-time and communte an hour from home-to-work-to-school, but since I can remember I have always wanted to be a nurse; I'm determined to stay on track and hopefully I will be a nurse soon.

I think that is a great move for you since the desire to serve people is their and their is no greater reward than to help people in their time of need and know that you have some how impacted someone else's life. Keep striving to meet your inner passion. I am doing the same, striving to meet my inner passion as a RN- to specialize in the OR.

Hi Erin! Congratulations and i wish you the best... Your story caught my eye because we have a little in common. I attended the University of Southern Ms and achieved a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in May 2008. I will begin nursing school in Aug 2008 (ADN-RN program). I originally wanted to be a nurse when i started college but i ended up changing my major after applying and not getting accepted into the program twice. I must admit I did get discouraged but i hung in there. I finally got accepted and hopefully in a year or two i will be a nurse. I commend you for not settling and continuing your education. Im sure you will do just fine in the accelerated program. Best wishes girl!

erin downing, you go girl! you have my highest admiration for going through all this schooling to follow your calling. Erin is setting an awesome example for women to come to get education. I need someone educated to take care of me when it is my time. She is an inspiration.
