In Her Own Words: A Nursing Student's Story
NursingLink
What do you think will be the most challenging thing about nursing school?
I believe the most challenging thing about nursing school will be the fast passed quality of the program. I will be learning everything in a year’s time and I will have to be motivated to stay focused.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years, I see myself working in labor and delivery and hopefully starting my own family. There is also a possibility, after I have had some floor experience, of continuing my education to become a Nurse Practitioner.
What are you looking forward to in nursing school? What are you dreading?
I am looking forward to continue my education and to achieve my goal. I am dreading is the accelerated nature of the program but this is something that I will have to manage.
What do you know now; that you wish you knew before you applied to nursing school?
If I would have done it all over again, I probably would have went to a four-year program to get my R.N. instead getting a degree in Biology. But at the time I was still young and did not know what I really wanted to do in life. It was through college experiences that I was able to find out. This is a great program to get people into the field of nursing. It is a lot better than starting all over again. I am excited and thrilled that I have this opportunity.
How difficult do you think it will be to find a job after you graduate? How will you go about looking for your first job?
Since there is a nursing shortage, I do believe it will not be very difficult to find a job after I graduate. Kaiser Permanente offers some individuals a scholarship as long as they work [for Kaiser] for two years. I plan on applying for this scholarship along with other possible scholarships.

How nice. It's good to volunteer to find out what nurses do. The experience is quite diffrent when you go from volunteering to actual nursing. People's lives are at stake and you risk getting sued at every turn. Keep focused on reality and real life nursing skills that will save your patient's lives someday. I have seen many a BSN student that were in their last semester that had not even given an injection yet. I don't agree that you can't work and devote your life to learning nursing as a career. I did it as a single mother, working, and going through a nasty divorce. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
