Get Hired

Get Hired

Beth Anderson, RN

You will be happy to find out that getting hired is truly “the easy step.” In nursing school, the employers come to you. as you will find yourself at many career fairs, with nurse recruiters from local hospitals trying to entice you with their cool pens and magnets. Do not be dazzled! Decide what you are looking for before the recruiters talk to you. Check out the NursingLink Career Center and search our jobs to see what’s out there. You can also use our Discussions to network with other nurses and find out who’s hiring. We even have a salary guide so you can see what you are worth.

Some things to consider include doing share time. Call the unit or floor where you would like to work and schedule some time to shadow a nurse. This simply means that you will spend some time observing a nurse at work so you can get a feel for how the unit operates, and whether or not you feel you will fit in.

After finishing the studies, creating a career that we dream of is the most difficult thing that all of us would face. I have faced it too. Many a time, what lures us first isn't exactly that we would have imagined or even thought we wanted. Making mistakes at this point of life regarding your career can even tarnish your image with other employers. So as you have explained, it becomes very important to plan ahead what you want and then proceed accordingly. You can go here and read more.

I think there isn’t a nursing shortage on a whole, there is a shortage of experienced nurses to fill current openings. It's always a good idea to get some letters of recommendation from your teachers or past employers. Remember to take down in your resume any online nursing masters degrees or qualifications you have. It helped me a lot, it makes you stand out. When applying go to the HR department and drop it off personally and say you wanted to make sure it reaches the right people, this makes a good first impression.

I completed my BSN 6 months ago, have sent out 250+ resumes, gone to 5 interviews, and still have not landed a job. I owe $45K for my degree which, at this time, seems to be doing me no good whatsoever! I realize that local economies have a lot to do with the job market, but there have recently been several articles published about new grad RNs not being assimilated into the workforce. (Check PubMed for at least one article, and the NCSBN has begun a research project looking at preceptorship training, new grad assimilation & new nurse attrition rates.)
I think your advice about job recruiters hunting down students at school or job fairs could use revision!

Hello, I have a BA and 8 years of experience on social service including: crisis counselor, foster care case manager, and for the past four years case manager in a psychosocial center. Now I want to change my career to nursing. Would my education, or job experience replace some of the credits for RN?
