Prepare for Your First Year as a Nurse

Prepare for Your First Year as a Nurse

Beth Anderson, RN

What happens after you get hired? How do you make a success of yourself?

The first year on the job is often the toughest for new nursing graduates, especially those who work in hospitals. In fact, new nurse graduates account for more than half of the turnover rate in some hospitals, according to a study published in 2007 by Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing researchers.

“There really are multiple reasons for [the first-year exodus],” says Patricia Benner, RN, PhD, professor at the University of California, San Francisco and a senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. “One is that nursing practice is incredibly complex. Over the past 60 years, the transfer of responsibility to nursing from medicine has been incredible. I think society doesn’t typically recognize that.”

Because the sickest patients are in the hospital, hospital RNs need good clinical judgment and the ability to recognize when a patient needs immediate intervention-challenges that are especially pronounced in a nurse’s first year of employment.

So what can you do to make your transition from nursing student to working nurse easier and your first years on the job more satisfying? Here are some issues to ask about and consider before and after taking the job.

LED Grow Lights is the most recent type of indoor plant lights, offering their customers a eco-friendly and-efficient option to HID (Intense Discharge) lighting. Just like our physiques require specific nutrition to remain strong and healthy, plants require specific ratios and colours of sunshine to be able to correctly photosynthesize.

It's a great site with lots of tips for surviving your first year as a nurse. I'm graduate in May of 2009 from a 2 year RN program and I feel that the advice given is really encouraging. If nothing else it makes you think about the challenges you may face and how your attitude affects how well you get through. I would tell anyone graduating from a nursing program to go through it and gain some words of wisdom before venturing out into the "real world". avene skin products

I have read a study at SteroidSources.com that first year nurses are put to trials by the hospital and by her fellow colleagues that's why the "the first-year exodus" is happening. Personally I think that it is a good thing because it is a great stress test and if you are not meant for this job then you should quit while at the beginning! My mother is a physician's assistant but at first she was a nurse. Now after 35 years of working in this domain she developed a very awkward defense mechanism against sadness.
