im one of those 40 year olds in nursing school. nursing school is competitive to get into. half of the qualified applicants were acctepted at my school. after the first exam, we lost 18 out of 136 students, after the second, we are down to 102 going into the final which is 1/2 composed of 13 chapters new material and half is cumulative. there are many on the cusp and may not make it through. Im told that by the time I graduate, my class may be 35-45 students. this is anothe reason for the shortage. makes sense. i wouldn't want a loved one being cared for by a nurse who graduated from an "easy" program.

very true - and I know one school that has a 5 year waiting list because they lack instructors and their enrollment for those wanting to enter the nursing program has increased dramatically.

Very true.Too many schools have waiting lists to get into nursing programs and many people do not have the funds to go back to school after unfortunate events.

When 40 year old guys go back to school to become nurses, perhap the profession will get more respect. It's not fair, but maybe that is how the world works!
