Hi Erin,
I just re-read you note to me. Sorry for the delay. I wanted to try to give you a respectable response.
The ability and willingness to re-locate is a strong point for you, because after talking to so many nurses on-line, it seems that some of the urban hospitals are getting saturated. I will give you a tidbit that I noticed over the course of my career.
As a Public Health Service Officer, I was re-located all over the country, doing a variety of jobs. This, I believe, is what helped me in the long-run. I was not stuck in the slot of being an NP or Peds nurse. I was also an administrator, clinical manager, epidemiologist, consumer safety officer, etc. I learned new things from each job and was able to use the knowledge gained from my nursing, to make myself a unique member of each of these teams.
I believe that if you are not flexible, you can find yourself at a dead-end. Because of my varied background, I was able to apply for jobs that nurses do not normally see themselves in.
As for where to locate, I would look at the place in the country where I would want to live (mountains, oceans, lakes, whatever) and look at those areas. Climate and weather are real concerns. Live in the desert southwest (e.g., El Centro, CA) and you can have 120 degree summers and earthquakes (I lived there for 4 years.) . Like to ski? Look at upstate New York (Lake Placid); SE Idaho (Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee), or over to Reno (Sierra Nevadas).
Weather, it's cold in the north (skiing, snowmobiles, Ice-fishing) or Florida (beautiful winters and springs, muggy summers and hurricanes); Midwest - great place to live (tornado alley); Rocky Mountain States (I grew up there, cannot think of anything bad unless you are into big city stuff and then you would know the meaning of isolation); California and Oregon - love to live there but very liberal, high taxes and restrictive gun laws (when gun laws are restricted, the other rights start to erode).
These are just some of my thoughts. You left a wide-open question, so I tried to touch on several areas of concern for making the move to anywhere (I know that in my career, I moved 20 times in 25 years (some short, some long) before I retired here in NH.
If you have any other questions, feel free to write.
Tom

Erin,
Haven't forgotten your question. I tried to answer it and it deleted when I tried to send, by then I was too tired and I just had a procedure done on my back and it will take a bit for me to think clearly, but an answer is coming. Just have to get a bit better.
Sorry,
Tom

Hi Erin,
Glad to hear that you are going to be graduating soon (December is kind-of soon). Not sure what kind of advice you want. I full of all kinds of stuff. I know, because my wife told me so :-)
Have a great week.
Tom
