I would suggest doing just what you are doing, getting an early start on researching school and checking any potential Hospital your area,you are interested in working at, and speaking with nurse recruiter and schedule to time to shadow and RN in the area of your choice, as well as gather other information. I actually , did this today with a hospital I'm interested in and I will be observing on the Neonatal and L&D department within the next week. Also, I suggest going the community college vs. place like Sanford-Brown, which is more costly and credits do always transfer to other college. Always check with college prior to enrolling to see if prior credits will transferr,regardless. Sp, it seem like you on the right track. Keep posted on how thing go.

We, have alot in common. I started off in the medical field as a Medical Assistant, then went to obtain my LPN, took a little break . After returning to work I decided to try my hand at Medical billing and Coding did that for the past 3 years, wasn't really my cup of tea, so I decided to come back to nursing and pursue my RN license. Can't wait to start school in Feb. Good luck I know you'll be sucessful.
