WHEN GOD MADE NURSES
When the Lord made Nurses...
He was in his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said " You're doing alot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said, " Have you read the specs on this order? "
" A Nurse has to be able to help an injured person, breathe life into a dying person, give comfort to a family that has lost their only child, and not wrinkle their uniform.
They have to be able to lift 3 times their own weight, work 12 to 16 hours straight without missing a detail, and console a grieving mother as they are doing CPR on a baby they know will never breathe again...
They have to be in top mental condition at all times, running on too-little sleep, black coffee and half-eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands. "
The Angel shook her head slowly and said,
" six pairs of hands..no way"
"It's not the hands that are causing me the problems," said the Lord, " It's the two pairs of eyes a Nurse has to have." "That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. " One pair that does quick glances while making note of any physical changes, and another pair of eyes that can look reassuringly at a bleeding patient and say,"You'll be all right, Ma'am." when they know it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
" I can't," said the Lord, " I already have a model that can talk to a 250 pound grieving family member whose child has been hit by a drunk driver...who, by the way, is in the next room uninjured..and also be able to feed a family of five on a Nurse's paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the Nurse very slowly.
"Can it think?" she asked. "You bet," said the Lord," It can tell you the symptoms of 100 illnesses; recite drug calculations in its' sleep; intubate, defibrillate, medicate, and continue CPR nonstop until help arrives...and still keep its' sense of humor.
This Nurse also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with a multi-victim trauma, coax a frightened elderly person to unlock thier door, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how nurses are insensitive and uncaring and are only doing a job."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the nurse. " There's a leak." she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."
"What is the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for patients they've tried in vain to save, for commitment to that hope that they will make a difference in a person's chance to survive, for life"
"You're a genius" said the angel.
The Lord looked somber...." I didn't put it there" He said.

Great news. Christian John Godfrey (my new grandson) was born this morning at 6:07 am, vaginally, with the help of an epidural. The L&D nurse could have been better at the time of delivery (much, much better), but the nurses afterward made up for a lot. He was 20.5 inches and 7 lbs 13 oz.
(We are friends with director of the place [Nurse-Midwife], so that will not happen to anyone else.)
He is adorable. Quiet. Only cried when taken from our warm, cuddly arms to have a bath. My son was horsing around with him (the 32 year old bachelor uncle) and Christian suddenly had a cute little smile and he ripped a loud one and filled his diaper.
My wife and I are trying to catch-up with sleep the rest of today. Tomorrow, we have friends coming over to help clean up tomorrow, so that my daughter and family do not have to stay in the motorhome in the backyard (that's not too bad, 34' Winnebago).
Will attach pictures when I get everything transferred.
Thank you for your well wishes and prayers.
Tom

Hope all is going well with you.
SUPER BUSY here. Daughter's 1st wedding anniversary today, baby is due in 7 days, just had electrician in for 2 days doing work (and he isn't finished yet), then I have to get my family to move all of the furniture to the corner of the rooms (every room), because tomorrow we start getting energy efficient windows installed to the entire house at once. In other words, I am surprized to have gotten this much time to play on the Internet :-)
I just had the electrician in doing a lot of re-wiring and up-grading of wires. Our house was build with "knob and tube wiring" Very old and can cause fires. Especially when accepting the loads that we put on them now.
So my bedroom alone, went from 9 old plugs, to 4-quads (16 plugs) and a single (18 plugs altogether.) With a/c, computers, rechargers, lamps, etc, etc. I figured that dropping $1200 into a good electric guy was much better than the pain and inconveinance of having my house burn down.
My daughter has appreciated it when I have re-positioned Christian a few times because he was on a nerve, or worse. She called me to her room one night and Christian was stretching from side-to-side and Ashley was nearly in tears. I oriented myself to Christian's positioning and rotated him back to a heads-down position. My daughter looked at me like I performed a miricale (it was then that I realized how bad she had really been hurting). They slept for the night.
All of this nursing and medical training hasn't gone totally to waste. I cared for pets before they died and can re-position the baby when needed (who knows, I might even deliver this baby, the way things are going).
Have a great week.
Tom

Good morning Charlene,
As soon as I get a copy, I will post a video we did last night. My daughter came into our room, plopped down on my side of the bed and said watch. When she coughed, her navel would jump around. I got an inspiration, because the navel looked like a frown. I drew eyes and a nose and the laughter ensued.
Whenever Ashley coughed, laughed, whatever; her belly button look like a mouth making funny faces. We video'ed it for about 5 minutes. It was hilarious.
My daughter is even more impressed with dad's abilities than before. Christian was sitting on her sciatic nerve and Ashley was hurting. So I lifted one of her legs and stuck my fingers in about where I figured his torso was and tiggled him. In about 15-20 seconds he moved off the nerve to the other side of the abdomen.
Then when my daughter stood up, the laughter began. First, she didn't have the baby sitting on her nerve, so lots of relief, but I had also shifted her weight to her left side and she started to lose her balance.
Last night, Ashley called me to her room and told me that Christian was doing a full body stretch, side-to-side. So I carefully placed my hands on either side of Christian and rotated him back into a heads down position. The relief was so immediate, that my daughter looked at me like a performed a miracle.
This is going to be one fun and busy child.
To believe that Planned Parenthood can be as cold as they are blows me away. Christian kicks every time he hears his name. If he hears his sister nearby (she is loud) he kicks, if he hears his dad or me, he will calm right down (my son is starting to be able to do that as well).
The OB doc told my daughter not to deliver this weekend, because he is not on call. He wants to be there when this baby is born. Christian has already developed one heck of a personality and he isn't even born yet. I have this feeling that he will be one of those children who will be reading at 2 or 3 years old.
Take care, Gotta go. Wife has a doctor's appointment, I have electriciian coming in tomorrow and window contractors starting work fast and furious, starting Monday (so we have to move the furniture for them to tape and tarp. I plan to stock the motorhome and live out there for a week or so).
Have a great day,
Tom
