- About Me
- I have a 14-year-old son and have been married to the most wonderful man for 3 years (we have been together 13 years). I work on a med/surg floor in the best hospital in Southern Illinois (not just my opinion). I have been an LPN since November 2007 and look forward to starting the ADN program within the next 2 years. My husband has several health issues that we are learning about this year. He is only 31 and has found out that he has an ascending aortic aneurysm and metastatic colon cancer (stage IV of course). I am very scared for his health, but don't want him to know that. Since I became a nurse, he has started to listen to my medical opinion about things, which he never would have thought of doing before I became a nurse. My son is 6' 1" and weighs 150 lbs. He wears a size 13 1/2 shoe. He will start high school next year and hopes to play basketball and/or football. I had him when I was 15 and never married his father (thank goodness).

Well, I will give you the update. The doctors are talking about not doing surgery at all now. The cancer is responding to the chemotherapy and the liver is not clearing up enough to resect any one part of it yet. At this point, we will continue with chemotherapy and as long as he has no symptoms from the tumor in his colon, there will be no surgery. I am a little relieved that he may not have surgery, but I am also worried that without it he won't survive this as long as he could. Keep praying for us. That is all we can ask for.

My husband had his fourth chemo treatment yesterday. He will go on August 19 to have a PET and MRI to see how the lesions on his liver are doing. Please pray that they will be decreased to the point that his doctor will resect one lobe of his liver (of course the on with the most lesions). He is in bed. He will sleep for at least 4-5 days (we predict from past treatments).

omg those puppies on the website are so cute! We just love our doxie. We did have 2 but had to give one to my parents because our apartments wouldn't let us have 2. We plan on having more once we finally buy a house!=)

Well, since I haven't updated since before the colonoscopy, here is the latest...
My husband has stage IV colon cancer, which has metastasised to his liver. He is seeing 3 physicians at Barnes-Jewish in St. Louis. He started chemotherapy in June and will have one more treatment (total of four treatments), then a PET scan and an MRI. If the tests come back favorable, they will take his large intestine and part of his liver out. If the tests do not come back favorable, he will have four more treatments and then another PET and MRI. No surgery will be done until the tumors on his liver (there are about 25+) decrease in size and/or number. They are looking to get one lobe of his liver free of tumors so that they can take that lobe out (not sure which lobe). He has the usual chemotherapy side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, fatigue, dry mouth. He is coping with the side effects much better than I expected him to.
Well, that is all I have to report for now. Chemotherapy is in two weeks and the tests will be done the following week. Keep us in your prayers and know that we appreciate it.

Update on my husband: Liver biopsy was done today. CEA and CA19-9 are elevated (VERY ELEVATED). On the way home from having the liver biopsy, he got sick and had me pull over and call an ambulance. It turned out to be a vasovagal response. Anyway, we are home now and waiting for results. Colonoscopy next Tuesday to see why there is blood in stool, but I am sure it is cancer. Any advice?
