When it comes to talking to a physician, be smart about it. Have everything ready so it can be covered in one phone call. If an Aide, LVN, Tech, or another staff nurse has come to you with concerns assess the problem yourself. Be sure and let the physician know that your are "uncomfortable with the situation." At 3 in the morning you may get the typical, "What do you want me to do about it?" The answer to that should be easy. Please come and assess it. If they don't, there is always the chain of command. No, it isn't fun to implement and the physician may get really aggravated with you, but what is more important? You are the patients advocate and you got into this business to fight for these people who sometimes can't fight for themselves.
