- About Me
- I guess you could say that I have a number of hobbies, but they don't all fit neatly into the standard categories. First, I like to try and attract wild animals to my yard. Living in Lynn, Massachusetts makes this interesting because while Lynn is an urban area and a former manufacturing city, it also boasts the second largest municipal park in the United States, a 2,200 acre forest park known as Lynn Woods. So, even though my house is on a busy street in a crowded residential area, my backyard abuts undeveloped land that leads to the Woods. I try to keep my yard as a natural habitat for animals but use food to attract them. I started out with a few birdfeeders and bird baths and have a wide variety of birds visiting regularly. Mourning doves, cardinals, chicadees, nuthatches, titmouses(titmice?), sparrows, pigeons, downy woodpeckers, flickers, all the usual birds make daily appearances. There have been a few less common visitors including wild turkeys, ducks, red-tailed hawks and even a parakeet one summer that I tried repeatedly to catch, unsuccessfully. Bird food also attracts other animals, squirrels being the most common, so I had to feed them too, peanuts and mixed nuts in the shells keep them satisfied and they don't take all the birdseed. I know a lot of people try to keep the squirrels away, not me. I have huge families of chipmunks criss-crossing the yard all summer; sometimes they will run over your foot if you stand in their way. Chipmunks also occasionally get into the house, but I have 3 cats who will quickly corner them so I can catch them and put them outside. Same thing goes for mice, when they get in. Groundhogs, skunks and racoons make regular visits. I once saw a red fox, but only once. Then there are the deer. Whitetail deer apparently love to eat birdfood. They will eat it right out of the feeders, even if they have to stand on their hind legs to reach them. The deer usually arrive at night but some days are there in the afternoon. They are more plentiful during the winter months when food is scarcer in the woods but do show up all year. I've had as many as 15 deer in the yard at once, nearly all are female. The few bucks I've seen have been small and young with 2-3 points on their antlers. They also eat my juniper bushes, but what they love to eat are carrots, apples and dried corn on the cob which I supply them only during the winter. I also have an abundance of toads. Toads seem to do just fine on their own and require no feeding from me. I love my yard, it is my haven of peace. My second hobby also takes place in my yard and started with a gift my wife received. My wife has a special interest in Saint Therese of Lisieux, the "Little Flower", a Saint of the Catholic Church. She received a gift of a garden statue of her favorite saint and I made a little tile patio on which the statue stands. I started putting candles on the patio to illuminate the statue at night so my wife can look at it from our bedroom window. Although I was raised Catholic, I haven't practiced it since my teen years and in the meantime I became a born-again Christian, so Catholic saints are not important to me. Still, with the candles burning in front of the statue, it just looked really cool and fit the yard so well. So I expanded on it with a statue of Jesus and one of Saint Francis(for the animals, of course), and more and more candles. Now I light candles every night and use the time to think and pray. Anytime someone I know is sick or in trouble, I light a candle for them and pray for them. It may not be the typical "born-again" way but it sure has focussed me on praying for those who need help and has improved my own relationship with God. Maintaining my yard as a quiet place of prayer and reflection as well as a refuge for local animals is my biggest and best hobby. It helps keep my life in the proper perspective. When we first bought our house, I made a promise to God that I would take care of his creatures that came to my property. This is an act of thanksgiving to God for allowing us to have a home of our own, not a quid pro quo arrangement where I'll do it if God does something for me. While this hobby takes place in my yard, it isn't "Gardening" and though it has a spiritual basis, it isn't "Church Activities", thus the check-off categories below don't fit well. I used to be an avid bicyclist and hope to resume at some point, but I'm not getting any younger. I have a baseball card collection but don't put much effort into it anymore. I also collect a few coins but am not an organized collector. I actually collect a number of things but most people refer to me as a packrat who doesn't want to throw anything away. I guess my stockpiles of cardboard boxes and ziplock bags of various sizes gave me away. I used to actively collect British Royalty memorabilia and still have an accumulation of over 200 plates, tins, banks, pocket knives, pens, pins, cufflinks, etc., etc. I have lost interest in the stuff and occasionally sell pieces on eBay, but the market is way down for this stuff. Maybe when Charles assumes the throne, prices will go up and I'll make my fortune. I love that "Sleeping" is one of the categories below. I love to be in bed. When I have a day off, but my wife is working, I sleep late, sometimes all day and when she gets home, my wife has to wake me up. Even then, if I can get away with it, I'll stay in bed until the next morning. Lazy? Maybe, but I'm sure the Hepatitis C has something to do with it too. I''ve checked some of the boxes below that don't need elaboration, so now you know a little more about me. Why anyone wants to know about me, however, is still a mystery.
