I just happened upon a topic from a now closed, account, regarding the comments from some RNs who say LPNs "aren't real nurses." I've heard this here and there too. One time, if I hadn't been in a computer class, I may have choked the person who told me I wasn't a real nurse. (So glad she had
transferred to a different job!) LPN training is the same as RN. RN's have one extra year of schooling. That extra year doesn't necessarily make a better nurse. It completely depends on the PERSON behind the certification.
I didn't get my RN initially because my training was military (excellent by the way) and a different format was used. When I DID return to college ten years ago, it was to GET OUT of nursing and get a teaching degree. I was happy!! But, everyone else said, "You're a good nurse. Stay in." My daughter said, "Mom, how many years until you retire as a teacher? How many years until you retire as a nurse?" I felt smothered and switched (or tried to. The leaders of the RN program never returned my SEVEN attempts to reach them) classes and was MISERABLE. Why? Because, I have to retake all the sciences due to time elapse. No. Yuck.
A few years ago, in a nursing journal, one of the editors is an LPN. In her editorial she said the reason she didn't earn her RN was that "life got in the way." WHAT A RELIEF to read that!!!
My point is writing this is for justification. I am competent. If I have a question, I as whomever I think will give me the best answer, RN or LPN. The sad thing is is that my hospital is now no longer hiring LPNs. It is like a slap in the face. Those nurses with Masters and PhDs, I find, are usually useless on the floor. (and as people)
I don't hear people telling a PA-C or ARNP, "you aren't a real doctor. Why don't you go to medical school?" And, in closing on that note, I've known PA-s I trust far more than some MDs. Why cant' we all appreciate one another and do the best we can as a TEAM for our patients??? Sorry this is so long.

Hi Teresa,
I hope this is how to reply! New York to Florida? I understand heat and humidity. I lived in Texas for three years. Anyway.. . . Are you retired from nursing? What type of nursing did you do?
