Hi Lane, glad to meet you, and your welcome. I love ICU/CCU and the best advice i can give you would be for you to just go to where the action is and either volunteer to record during a code, do compressions, assist with any kind of procedure. Never be afraid to let the doc know it's the first time you're assisting in a procedure ( you'll get more respect that way). Introduce yourself to the docs and make sure you ask them their names (remember them). Make sure you are in "their faces" when they do rounds, and your Nursing badge is right where they can see it. Keep eye contact and make it a point that docs remember your name and face. That's how you'll gain respect and have a better working relationship with them, without kissing butt.
Be a team player. Always ask if you can be of assistance. Befriend the most knowledgeable nurse you know in the unit....he/she will be a good mentor. Don't judge the nurses that are a little rough on the edges or a bit jaded....they may have been around the block too many times already and may actually be good resources for new ICU/CCU nurses such as yourself.
I can type all day and monopolize your comment wall but I think I've overstayed my welcome. Thanks for letting me share all that with you. Any questions or if you want to pick my brain for anything....feel free to contact me. I LOVE NEURO ICU as well , and I am always willing to share my knowledge with anyone who wants to listen...
It's been fun..

Hey Lane! Well...... It's alot different than the private sector. Worked med/surg oncology for 12 years in the private sector prior to coming to the VA working in SICU. One of the things that brought me here is that most of the equipment is top of the line. We are a no lift facility. All our rooms have hydraulic lifts in the ceilings that have tracks that even go into the bathroom. We are also computerized charting and all notes that have been entered, medications, problem list, social work....etc... can be seen at any VA facility nation wide. Im working my 4 out of 6 nights as we took in veterans from Louisiana during the hurricane. No problem there as their medical records were in the computer. We also get 5 weeks vacation from the time you hire on. 13 sick days and all federal holidays. If your are scheduled to work the holiday its double time. The only draw back that I've had is we work primarily with residents. They can be really trying at times. You just want a "real" doctor sometimes. I was used to that in the private sector. The VA is a teaching facility and they are all about education. I'm finishing my bachelors now and hope to get my APN with their help. Loved the pictures in your album. I think Daisy Mae is toooooooo cute.

My mom got a tattoo when she was about 52 when she went on vacation to Florida with my brother and his family. My youngest daughter got her first one when she turned 18 and got a second one a few months later. My oldest daughter is 21 and got one also. You do good work according to my daughter. I don't know alot about tattoos. I was considering a nursing cap with 09 after I graduate and pass my boards. I am not sure yet. I am still thinking about it. You aren't that far from me. You being a nurse also would make me feel more comfortable.

I had to change my blue smiley. It was not mine to use unless for purely personal use. And, though I represent myself online, I also represent my company. Check out the forum post I put up in The Break Room. It's call; "Psssst.... where is TCNToday?" That help you understand me and my project. - Jim
