    Hey Lane!
Well...... It's alot different than the private sector. Worked med/surg oncology for 12 years in the private sector prior to coming to the VA working in SICU. One of the things that brought me here is that most of the equipment is top of the line. We are a no lift facility. All our rooms have hydraulic lifts in the ceilings that have tracks that even go into the bathroom. We are also computerized charting and all notes that have been entered, medications, problem list, social work....etc... can be seen at any VA facility nation wide. Im working my 4 out of 6 nights as we took in veterans from Louisiana during the hurricane. No problem there as their medical records were in the computer. We also get 5 weeks vacation from the time you hire on. 13 sick days and all federal holidays. If your are scheduled to work the holiday its double time. The only draw back that I've had is we work primarily with residents. They can be really trying at times. You just want a "real" doctor sometimes. I was used to that in the private sector. The VA is a teaching facility and they are all about education. I'm finishing my bachelors now and hope to get my APN with their help.
