How High Heels Hurt Women's Bodies

How High Heels Hurt Women's Bodies

Good thing nurses get to wear Crocs...

Just how detrimental is the extended use of high heels to women’s bodies? Interestingly enough, not a single piece of men’s clothing poses a similar risk to men’s health.

But just because something is bad for women doesn’t mean that women will stop wearing it. High heels are one easy way of fitting a certain aesthetic concept of what a professional woman should look like. But where do we draw the line, with fashion?

The Knee
The altered posture of walking in high heels places excess force on the inside of the knee – a common site of osteoarthritis among women. One study found that knee joint pressure increased by as much as 26 Percent when a woman wears heels.

Calf
Calf muscles contract and adjust to the angle of the high heels. Muscles may shorten and tighten.

Morton’s Neuroma
Heel height and a narrow toebox can create a thickening of tissue around a nerve between the third and fourth toes, which can lead to pain and numbness in the toes.

Posture
High heels push the center of mass in the body forward, taking the hips and spine out of alignment.

Pressure
High heels may make legs look longer, but as the heel height goes up, so does the pressure on the forefoot.

Achilles Tendon
When the front of the foot moves down in relation to the heel, the Achilles tendon tightens up.

Bunions
Tight-fitting shoes cause a bony growth on the joint at the base of the big toe, which forces the big toe to angle in towards the other toes.

Pump Bump
The rigid backs or straps of high heels can irritate the heel, creating a bony enlargement also known as Haglund’s deformity.

Ankle Injuries
High heels impair balance; a wearer is at a greater risk of falling, which could lead to a sprained or broken ankle.

Metatarsalgia
High heels force the body’s weight to be redistributed. Prolonged wear can lead to joint pain in the ball of the foot.

Hammertoes
A narrow toebox pushes the smaller toes into a bent position at the middle joint. Eventually, the muscles in the second, third and forth toes become unable to straighten, even when there is no confining shoe.

I had no idea HH hurt you like that. I have worn them forever and they are cozy to me. I can't wear flip flops on tens without my feet hurting a little. Who would have thought. I have also noticed different back pain but I bet it is caused from the heels. Kind of gives you a new thing to think about

al: I think it is all pushed on us by the fashion police. I put on a pair of heels when we went on our cruise. First time I had heels on in more than 10 years. My husband makes jokes about the shoes I bought to wear to work. He thinks they would look great as stilttos. They are so ugly but so good for my feet and my back. A nurse I work with is always making jokes about how sexy they are.

Why do women do that? Sacrifice comfort for esthetics. What ever happened to "take me as I am?" I guess I missed the boat. When I see a woman in high heels, I see a patient waiting to happen. When I see a woman in a good pair of ortho foot wear like well taken care of "new balance" tennis shoes, I tell myself, there goes a woman who knows how to take care of herself.

I love this article, I think I'm going to email to Clinton Kelly and Stacey London on TLC's What Not to Wear! I never wear heels. Threw my last pair away in 1992 after I had foot and ankle surgery and was off work for six months and in agony for another few years if on my feet to long. Give me an attractive pair of flats and I'll consider wearing them, otherwise I'm in clogs, sandals, flops athletic shoes.

I think this is veryinteresting. i used to model and the only shoe we could get away with wearing was a heel and it couldnt be smaller than 2.5 inches. it defitelyput some strian on my lower back and hip ligament on the R. side. needless to say. i only own 1 pair of heels now, i wear the m like many for special occassions that i know wont last more than 2-3 hours... usually by an hour im dying to get them off. i thought this article stated things very clearly and was very interesting.

I wear high heels on special occasions and I like how they look, but I always pay the price. They kill my feet.

Right again. It is such a burden to always be right. There are five girls and one boy in my family. My brother believed that his sisters walked on water.

High heels are right up there with breast implants, face lifts, body modification surgeries, body tattoos that are on strategically placed on the body to draw the eyes to a specific region of the body. To me it does not change or alter the personality of an individual though they may be visually pleasant. Vanity does NOT do the body good.

So what about men who like high heels? And so does military shoes, even though they are flat. When worn 12 hrs a day they create the same problems.
