The American Nurses Association (ANA) announces its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) in the 2008 Presidential Election. The ANA represents the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses.

“As President, Barack Obama will bring real change to our health care system,” said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. “Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession by the American people, and we, as a profession, trust that Barack Obama will see that affordable quality health care is made available to everyone.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association,” said Sen. Barack Obama. “The nurses of America serve our country tirelessly, and I share their belief that we must bring affordable and accessible health care to all Americans. My plan lowers health care costs for the average American family by up to $2500 and finally makes health care work better for American families than it does for the drug and insurance companies.”

“Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton spoke at ANA’s House of Delegates in June about the need to move forward in unity to bring about real, much needed change to our health care system, and our nurses responded: ‘Yes we can’” Patton added. “Nurses represent the largest group of health care professionals in this country, and working together, we can use our power in the voting booth to make health care a priority, and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”

Senator Obama is committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Barack Obama recognizes that nurses play a critical role in every aspect of patient care, and the nursing shortage ranks as one of the most pressing issues facing our health care system. Obama’s health care plan includes expanded funding to improve the primary care and public health practitioner workforce; including loan repayments, improved reimbursement and training grants.

Barack Obama has a history of advocacy for nurses and patients. In the Illinois senate, he helped lead efforts to protect nurses and improve the quality of health care. In the U.S. Senate, he cosponsored the Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act, which limits mandatory overtime for nurses to true emergency situations, and as President, he has promised to sign this important legislation into law.

ANA has been making presidential endorsements since 1984. The endorsement process includes sending a questionnaire on nursing and health care issues to all of the Democratic and Republican candidates, an invitation to all of the democratic and republican candidates for a personal interview and an online survey of ANA’s membership regarding which candidate is most supportive of nursing’s agenda.

The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses through its 54 constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

I also did not have a hand in the election of Obama and proud to say it. I am a Texan and proud to say that my home state did not vote him in either. Guess those of you that did will reap what you sowed,,,,,,but you also made sure that those of us who knew better will also get the raw end of it!

Plenty of People in Georgia wanted Obama to win. But there is syill alot of hate and racism in that state. I know because I am from small town GA. 1.8 Million people to be exact. Note how the small towns voted as opposed to cities. I think that says alot.

How political does the ANA need to be? Why endorse a candidate that may not win? What then? How does this help us as Nurses? My employer does not support a candidate - I haven't seen too many companies that endorse a political party/candidate. Why is the ANA so Vocal? I am very disappointed that the ANA continues to support political candidates (and it always seems to be the Democratic Party). Why is that? I am ready to quit the ANA.

I don't think the AMA should have endorsed anyone, It would be more practical to be accessible to each candidate. The AMA should be representing me and my peers, not some political candidate.
Most nurses I know don't see the world of sick people in political shades of blue or red.

so, I guess we should just keep everything the same right? Mmmm....I'm gonna have to say...no. Obama might be our next president.....why would any if you speak such negative things about his accomplishments as president? If he wins he will be the president of the united states....all of the united states including those who do not support him now. This means you will be affected just like everyone else if he's president....wouldn't you want your president to do well so you as an American citizen can prosper? This bashing makes no sense.

I will also not help this organization anymore. You all will see that all Obama promises will not come to pass. He is just a puppet for the liberals. he tell you what you want to here, but has not walked the talk. GS in Houston

I stopped reading when you insinuated that Roosevelt was the president responsible for the great depression. Another one who needs to crack a book.

I can NOT agree with the ANA's support of Obama. I have traveled abroad and seen what socialized medicine truly means to peoples' accessibility to health care. I cannot abide by a system that will overwhelm health care, tell people that they have to wait to have a necessary intervention done because there are not enough funds to cover it now, or a younger potentially more socially productive person is given priority. We are already seeing health care organizations hire non-skilled personnel to fill positions that should be held by RN's, this will only get more pronounced under Obama's plan for health care. The cost of his health insurance plan will explode as more and more people become un-employed due to the staggering tax increases he plans on imposing, killing jobs and sending us into a depression. His plan is a mirror of what Roosevelt did that sent us into the great depression. The availability of health care will diminish because hospitals will go out of business. The thought that being a nurse is a secure job will be no more. Universal health care sounds so good to nurses, after all we want to help all, we need to fix things, and hence why we chose this field. I see Obama as actually diminishing nurse’s ability to help. If you do the math, his so called tax cuts are the equivalent to a shell game. The cap on FICA will be lifted and FICA deductions will increase starting at the first dollar you make. Repeal of the Bush Tax cuts and an implementation of taxes that have been on hold will result in a net tax increase for everyone who earns a wage in this country. I guess that will be ok since the unemployment rolls will increase, including nurses. We will be fine until there is no more money for unemployment pay outs. With our economy in shambles, Obama's inability and unwillingness to meet our foreign obligations, and the naivety of many US citizens, our National Security is at Great Risk. I have a relentless fear for the future of this nation. In the short term view the ANA may see Obama as a positive thing for health care. I believe long term ramifications will be disastrous. I resent the ANA professing to speak for me.

I am all for Universal Healthcare for everyone. Hospitals are a revolving door for a lot of patients because we get them a little better and then we send them home when they are unable to afford medications. We are unable to help them find a means to getting their medications because our social workers and nurses can only do so much. I believe that it is more expensive to keep treating the same patient over and over again because of problems relating to not taking medications then providing everyone with universal healthcare. I know many of you may think well there are a lot of pharmacies that provide generic drugs really cheap, but it really is hard for those that have to use a non-generic drug or think about that person who has to make a decision on whether or not they will eat tonight or go buy prescriptions and medical supplies. Kudos to The ANA for supporting Barack Obama

Every american deserves the same healthcare no matter what they earn. Is it fair that some people can't afford their medication and or health care. This country needs healthcare reform and does anyone think that McCain cares? This counrty does not need another four years of handed down Bush politics.

Ah that evil word.."socialism". Yes I agree, we nurses work VERY hard for our money. But if you you take some time to analyze his proposal, taxes will increase for household incomes that make over $250.000/year. Show me a nurse who makes this? If you are interested in finding out your tax cut go here. http://taxcut.barackobama.com/
