The American Nurses Association (ANA) announces its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) in the 2008 Presidential Election. The ANA represents the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses.

“As President, Barack Obama will bring real change to our health care system,” said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. “Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession by the American people, and we, as a profession, trust that Barack Obama will see that affordable quality health care is made available to everyone.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association,” said Sen. Barack Obama. “The nurses of America serve our country tirelessly, and I share their belief that we must bring affordable and accessible health care to all Americans. My plan lowers health care costs for the average American family by up to $2500 and finally makes health care work better for American families than it does for the drug and insurance companies.”

“Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton spoke at ANA’s House of Delegates in June about the need to move forward in unity to bring about real, much needed change to our health care system, and our nurses responded: ‘Yes we can’” Patton added. “Nurses represent the largest group of health care professionals in this country, and working together, we can use our power in the voting booth to make health care a priority, and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”

Senator Obama is committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Barack Obama recognizes that nurses play a critical role in every aspect of patient care, and the nursing shortage ranks as one of the most pressing issues facing our health care system. Obama’s health care plan includes expanded funding to improve the primary care and public health practitioner workforce; including loan repayments, improved reimbursement and training grants.

Barack Obama has a history of advocacy for nurses and patients. In the Illinois senate, he helped lead efforts to protect nurses and improve the quality of health care. In the U.S. Senate, he cosponsored the Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act, which limits mandatory overtime for nurses to true emergency situations, and as President, he has promised to sign this important legislation into law.

ANA has been making presidential endorsements since 1984. The endorsement process includes sending a questionnaire on nursing and health care issues to all of the Democratic and Republican candidates, an invitation to all of the democratic and republican candidates for a personal interview and an online survey of ANA’s membership regarding which candidate is most supportive of nursing’s agenda.

The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses through its 54 constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

I absolutely DO NOT ENDORSE OBAMA...and I resent being included in any support of a candidate who does not respect life, who believes in "spreading the wealth" and encouraging more government, and more welfare. I work too hard for my living to give my money to those who will not work. Barack Obama is a socialist, and this association will be short many members by doing things like this.!

I am personally am pleased with the ANA's endorsement of Obama. I believe that he has a better health plan that aims to cover the uninsured, which is not the goal of McCain's health plan at all. There are many intelligent and hard working people who do not choose to be unemployed and of course there are many people who are not physically or mentally capable of working. Should we penalize them or aim to advocate for the community as we do for our pateint's everyday? Abortion has always and will always probably be the deciding factor for many voters. For me, it does not make any sense to make abortion illegal and ignore the factors contribute to the issue. More federal and private funds should be allocated towards programs and resources that prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place.

I will not be joining this assoication. When my renewal comes up for their magazine. I will not be renewing it. I was a due paying member of the UAW for many years before becomming an RN. This year it made me so happy to know my dues had not gone to some one I do not support. It now makes me happy to know I will not be waisting my money to another organization, whom uses membership due money to support things I do not support.
I do not support rewarding people for not working. I do not support the killing of unborn babies. I do not support free health care to folks that take jobs for higher pay verses jobs with health care benifits.
If you take everyones money because they have worked for a living and give it to those whom do not work. Well then why work? Why work overtime? Or perhaps for the first time in history, poor people will be employing other poor people, due to the fact the only person whom has money wil be the government.
    No thank you.

I am disappointed that this site is endorsing Obama. Not everyone feels he would be the better president. I don't feel it is appropriate to endorse a candidate since I'm sure many feel the same as me. This really turns me off. I will not just follow this site's lead blindly. I have my own opinions and I will not be a sheep. I think people really need to research who this man is and not go blindly to the voting booth. I will vote for the candidate who I feel will benefit the nation as a whole not by false lies for my own personal wants. There, I had my soap box. I'm just disappointed.

Here's a link to lighten your mood on the upcoming election.....

    http://www.peteyandpetunia.com/VoteHere/VoteHere.htm

This sums it up for me....

As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:
    1. All nurses, aides, and technicians will be pooling their overtime and raises into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a fair shake. This will help those who are too busy for overtime to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.

    2. All top management will now be referred to as the government. We will not participate in this pooling experience because the law doesn't apply to us.

    3. The government will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging it's workers to continue to work hard for the good of all.

    4. The nurses, cna's, and technicians will be thrilled with these new policies because it's good to spread the wealth. Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more patriotic.

I am an ANA member but I am beginning to think about canceling my membership. I have personally been in meetings with a representative from ANA who was also a member of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses which I was at the time. She was asked why it was that hospitals in Tulsa, OK were having to join the Teamsters Union to get support against the administration's unfair practices when the ANA organization's claim was to help mediate unfair nurse/administration practices. She could not give an answer-only excuses and promises to check into it more. Nothing ever was done by ANA. Now they recommend I vote for Mr. Obama because he has mentioned some thing they want to hear. I am not stupid, I have been a nurse for 26 years and I am a Christian which I know is a "dirty word" these days but I believe a nurse is "called" to nursing by God who gives you the gift to help heal the sick . That is why everyone cannot be a nurse. Mr. Obama supports abortion, which as a nurse and Christian I can not overlook and say "oh well, he'll help nursing and healthcare" . My question is what about the unborn child's health. His plan sounds like socialized healthcare which is not what liberals think it is. People have to wait sometimes for months for surgeries and appointments for screenings. That's why the rich come to America for their healthcare. The incentive for quality healthcare in a socialized setting is absent, the litigation cases are not easily initiated as they are here so the doctors and nurses don't have that extra control to encourage more safety in healthcare process. Finally, political candidates seem to always promise whatever they think the people want to hear, I can not believe people fall for that political rhetoric. I would like to see a politician speak in regular English not use language that goes around in circles and never gives a clear answer. Also I also judge a person with the type of people who he/she associates with or who supports them. If those people are against the values that beneficial and show respect for the opponent instead of making degrading remarks, and even calling our President "retarded" which is an offensive word in itself but to insult our President even if you don't agree with him, leads me believe these people are mean-spirited and egotistical so if they support Mr. Obama and he takes their money and does not separate himself from them, I can not believe he is an honest and caring human being.

regarding healthcare, i don't believe any one person has a 'good' answer to all the problems but must be open to finding a better way. regarding most of the rest of platform issues, my opinion is NOBAMA. along with that, NOANA also.

I echo chymarra's opinion. I think Obama will be a threat to our country--not an asset.

I will not renew my membership in the ANA because of this endorsement. I am tired of people using my money and my degree to promote their own agendas. If the ANA were really protecting our rights, they would vote against more government involvement in health care, not for it. How often do we see patients refused the care they need because medicare/medicaid won't pay for it. What makes anyone think that throwing more tax dollars at the problem will cure it?
Before we model our health care system after other countries, check out the annual salary for nurses in these countries. (adjusted for cost of living). I don't think it looks so appealing.
I am also tired of subsidizing everyone in the country and the world while my tax burden increases and my dollar is worth less every day.
I say we stop repeating every shred of political rhetoric we hear and start speaking for ourselves. Vote! Call and write our political representatives, (from the city/county level on up to the executive level) and tell them to stop wasting money on stupid pet projects and do their jobs or we will replace them. Keep calling and harassing them until they start to do what their constituents want, And do the same to the people running the ANA.
