The American Nurses Association (ANA) announces its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) in the 2008 Presidential Election. The ANA represents the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses.
“As President, Barack Obama will bring real change to our health care system,” said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. “Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession by the American people, and we, as a profession, trust that Barack Obama will see that affordable quality health care is made available to everyone.”
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association,” said Sen. Barack Obama. “The nurses of America serve our country tirelessly, and I share their belief that we must bring affordable and accessible health care to all Americans. My plan lowers health care costs for the average American family by up to $2500 and finally makes health care work better for American families than it does for the drug and insurance companies.”
“Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton spoke at ANA’s House of Delegates in June about the need to move forward in unity to bring about real, much needed change to our health care system, and our nurses responded: ‘Yes we can’” Patton added. “Nurses represent the largest group of health care professionals in this country, and working together, we can use our power in the voting booth to make health care a priority, and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”
Senator Obama is committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Barack Obama recognizes that nurses play a critical role in every aspect of patient care, and the nursing shortage ranks as one of the most pressing issues facing our health care system. Obama’s health care plan includes expanded funding to improve the primary care and public health practitioner workforce; including loan repayments, improved reimbursement and training grants.
Barack Obama has a history of advocacy for nurses and patients. In the Illinois senate, he helped lead efforts to protect nurses and improve the quality of health care. In the U.S. Senate, he cosponsored the Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act, which limits mandatory overtime for nurses to true emergency situations, and as President, he has promised to sign this important legislation into law.
ANA has been making presidential endorsements since 1984. The endorsement process includes sending a questionnaire on nursing and health care issues to all of the Democratic and Republican candidates, an invitation to all of the democratic and republican candidates for a personal interview and an online survey of ANA’s membership regarding which candidate is most supportive of nursing’s agenda.
The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses through its 54 constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

I like how one person speaks for all, this is the one that will complain about socialized medicine... When she is WAY over worked, underpaid.... The taxes will come out of everyone. The plan is to tax the wealth at 30+ percent. Woo Hoo, hope nobody needs a job, we'll be moving to other countries just to work

I'm sorry to prove you wrong, "nosocilizedmedicine", BUT people DO die in waiting rooms in this country. Here's a link to the article "Woman Dies Ignored on Hospital Waiting Room Floor". The last time I checked, New York is part of the US....isn't it?????
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/07/01/hospital.death.ap/index.html
The link includes video surveillance during the 20+ hours that she waited in the ER then collapsed, and footage of medical personnel basically kicking her foot once she was finally discovered. That should be proof enough for you, right? Maybe this doesn't happen in the setting you work, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN!!!!!!!
Regardless if someone has come to the ER for a heart attack, gas pains, OR drug seeking behavior........we as nurses treat them NOT judge them! Your Christianity is shining very bright "nosocializedmedicine"!
It's ironic that you place the blame on long waiting lines in the ER on those who are "faking"......the woman I noted above was not faking! Maybe the hospital staff had the same idea as you while she waited there all those hours.....maybe that's why she was never treated. Maybe that's why she ended up dying alone and without dignity......maybe you should just treat your patients and not judge them!
I am a Christian, I love Jesus, and I support Obama. Obama is NOT a Muslim. Get off the same old tired rumors about flag pins and Islam already!

I just want to know where Obama plans to get all the money to fund his programs. He is not going to tax middle class but tax those making more than $250,000. Getting ready to see the next group of business leave the US for more tax friendly countries. Most mom and pop business make more than this althought not as profit but they use this money to meet payroll demands, pay for utilities, rent and insurance. These are the people Obama will be taxing, say goodbye to all the little stores and hello to the big box stores because they will be our only source of retail services. Hello to support Obama is to support our demise as a country

UNBELIEVABLE!! I just cannot comprehend that ANY nurse would support Obama, much less the ANA.

There goes the country. Just pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan now. My service has meant nothing. Sen. Obama has absolutely no idea what is happening in Iraq or Afghanistan--he he has never been there, and he serves on a subcommittee on one of the aspects of the War in Afghanistan. That is despicable.

First of all I can't believe the ANA is backing Obama. How can any real American back someone who doesn't believe in our national anthem, pledge, or flag? As far as healthcare, there will never be a right answer. For all of you who think patients are neglected in waiting rooms, ignored, and left to die, I would like to know where you saw this happen. I don't think any fellow nurses would agree with this statement. I have been a nurse for 10 yrs and never seen any one neglected, ignored, and left to die. I can tell you why the wait in the ER is so long. To many people know how to play the system. I can't tell you how many people have came through the ER faking chest pain, seizures, etc. to get seen before others. And yes, most of the time these people are drug seekers. So how is socialized medicine going to fix this? Once Obama puts socialized medicine into effect that is when you will see patients neglected in waiting rooms, ignored, and left to die. Just ask our Canadian patients and nurses. As for as research on McCain and Obama, Obama stated he wanted to visit all 57 states during this election. Correct me if I am wrong, there are 57 Islamic states and not 57 states in America. Obama is of Mulism faith. Our country is based on Christianity. Obama will never be seen as a Chrisitan through his Mulism family. Do you not know of his father and family violent history. His own cousin burned Christians. Just how much time has Obama spent with our military? How much time has he spent with our troops? What will you do when Obama destroys our military and we become victims of terror? I hope I have the honor of taking care of you if this happens. And yes, McCain is a war hero. I took care of a man who was in war with McCain. I am done for now. God Bless our TROOPS and God Bless AMERICA!

Actually, I'm pretty sure that although nurses make a nice living we don't make $250,000 plus per year. Thus, our scrub pockets won't be tapped in excess for tax revenue like has happened consistently over time for the middle class. To the contrary, with Obama as president, we will have more of our hard earned cash to keep. It's the wealthy individuals and large corporations that will be taxed. If that means the large oil companies.....who have, for the last few years, reported never before seen profits, at the cost of average citizens......then bring it on......PLEASE! Because as many times as the government has said they "will not allow price gauging", Mr. Bush and the republicans most definitely have allowed that to go on, meanwhile the oil companies have laughed in our faces. McCain wants to spare revenue for companies like this, which is rediculous and frankly makes me angry when I'm spending $70 at the pump for gas that obviously does NOT cost the oil companies as much as they say. It's simple math. I don't think a degree in economics is needed to figure this out.
Who is "Joe the plumber"? Does anyone know who this friend of McCain's is? He refers to him a lot. ;-) LOL

If Obama wins, get ready for wealth distribution not seen since the days of the Bolshevik Revolution. It doesn't matter that you ate ramen noodles to get through nursing school and drove a beater car to clinicals. He is going to reach into your scrubs and take your hard earned money and give it to someone else. I grew up in the projects and I resent this! Finally, no one talked about the economy when the DOW was kicking butt. We never heard how great the DJI was. Now, the media spins the economy into a recession/depresssion and claim that an inexperienced huckster from Chicago can save us. I am really upset about this.

"Good healthcare plan for under $100 [for anyone]"? Please post some info on that. In my experience, these plans cover little to nothing and only those wacked out doctors accept it.
The Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Medicare D) has worked very well for many seniors. It has saved them a lot money they would have otherwise spent on Rx. The key is choosing the right plan for your needs. The Medicare website has an excellent tool for doing so and each state has senior service agencies to assist in the selection. The reason why some have a negative opinion about it is because of a few cases they hear about which are not the norm. You know....the stories presented for sensationalism. I have many years experience working with seniors and know the facts on this program.
Sensationalism is also what drives rumors about our presidential candidates. This ones "a womanizer", "he is a war criminal and purposely bombed women and children", so and so "hates babies", this one "isn't patriotic because he won't wear a flag pin". Check out this link to see how rediculous these rumors have become for BOTH candidates and the effects they have....
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/15/internet.rumors/
We as highly intelligent individuals NEED TO EXAMINE THE FACTS and context of them. We must not make a decision about our next president based on rumors. We need to use our minds in evaluating who will be best for the job, not just our emotions as a result of some sensational stoires we hear.
After 8 years of lies, deceit, and pure stupidity one would think Americans would be more sophisticated in evaluating candidates for our next president. We need to know FACTS and specifics about the proposals of each candidate before we make a decision. This includes their healthcare policies. Before we make decisions, we need to know exactly what they are proposing and the truth about how that will effect our nation as a whole. This election is so crucial so please take the time to actually research the facts instead of blinding believing whatever you see, read, and hear.
Yes, change can be frightening......yes, change can feel uneasy. BUT, if we are to ever see a better existence for ourselves and those around us, we will need change to occur. To those of you who are afraid of Obama's healthcare plans....are you seriously content with the current state of healthcare? Are you seriously okay with knowing that children and unborn babies aren't getting the medical attention they need? There's a lot of discussion about how terrible healthcare will be, but isn't it terrible now? Please wait a long time in the ER right now!!!!! People are neglected in waiting rooms, ignored, and left to die right now!!!!! People die prematurely and do not get the healthcare they need right now!!!!! What is the "best care"? Is that provided now? If so, why do people die or have complications from negligence or malpractice? As far as seniors being "written off". America is the country least likely to honor, respect, and care for it's elders!!!! Other countries, including those with this "socialized medicine" have far more concern for their seniors and families take a personal responsibility in maintaing their health.

And I forgot...... since the government just bailed out the financial sector and it will be unstable for some time..... where do you think the money will come from to have a socialized system.... (while you are being taxed for the mortgage crisis) the truth there is no money for this.... won't happen in the next 4 years... much less eight... and also needs a constitutional referendum.... (which no one is telling you)... keep dreaming ANA.....

Socialized medicine is good if you want to be ...not treated... like everyone else.... it doesn't give better access to health care.... it reduces the ability to get the best care... and in that goal/result everyone is equal... HA.... and you will be one of the unequalled... untreated.... For starters.... politicians do not recommend any change in any system unless there is a BIG PAYOUT... for someone (kickback anyone?) in the end.... so it will be at the expense of all who are socialized into the system... (remember the Medicare Prescription changes.... who benefitted.... not the retired people...)
check out the countries that have socialized medicine.... it's not the people that live there getting all the plastic surgery... it's the ones who can afford it coming in from the outside.... or maybe you want to sit in an emergency room 9 or more hours waiting for care.... how about the fact in many countries... once you are over 65 or 66 you are written off as "too brittle" and not offerred transplants available to us here..... it's not socialized medicine.... it's POPULATION CONTROL... and don't think it's not coming here..... so go ahead and vote... Obamma said it himself.... "If my daughter makes a mistake...I don't want her punished with a baby..." and yes he was the only one to vote for allowing babies that survived abortion attempts to be left to die.... just opens the door farther.... and make no mistake.... overseas..they're already looking into whether or not a a dementia patient can make the decision for themself ...to voluntarily end their life... after all dementia is irreversible.... check out.. Second Hand Smoke: Your 24/7 Bioethics Seminar... and learn the real lies about socialized medicine...

More and more people do not want to be responsible for themselves. They want to drink as much alcohol, smoke as many cigarettes, eat as much food, do how many ever drugs, have as much sex with as many people, and drive as fast as they want and expect some one other than themselves to help pay the consequences of those actions. This is morally wrong yet our politicians are telling people it's alright we will be there for you. There is good affordable insurance out there particularly for young people and young families. There is plenty of good insurance out there for single healthy young adults for under one hundred dollars a month. Most don't purchase it. But yet they engage in the very costly behaviors mentioned above and many have nice cars, cell phones, big TV and cable, stereo systems, eat out, and the list goes on and on. Yes and there's always someone to blame. Yes, you bet I teach my patients responsibility for their actions. I'm their advocate too but I'm also there to interpret reality. Do people fall in the cracks? Yes but I've worked in enough hospitals for almost 30 years to know that unlike any country in the world, like someone has already pointed out, if you need your gall bladder out, it's coming out in a relatively short period of time (immediately to less than a week) whether you're legal and no money or illegal resident with no money. Oh well I'll stop for now.

I think maybe some of you should further scrutinize why you REALLY object to having Obama as president. For many of you, I doubt the fact that you THINK his healthcare plan is wrong for nurses will be your answer,
