The American Nurses Association (ANA) announces its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) in the 2008 Presidential Election. The ANA represents the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses.
“As President, Barack Obama will bring real change to our health care system,” said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. “Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession by the American people, and we, as a profession, trust that Barack Obama will see that affordable quality health care is made available to everyone.”
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association,” said Sen. Barack Obama. “The nurses of America serve our country tirelessly, and I share their belief that we must bring affordable and accessible health care to all Americans. My plan lowers health care costs for the average American family by up to $2500 and finally makes health care work better for American families than it does for the drug and insurance companies.”
“Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton spoke at ANA’s House of Delegates in June about the need to move forward in unity to bring about real, much needed change to our health care system, and our nurses responded: ‘Yes we can’” Patton added. “Nurses represent the largest group of health care professionals in this country, and working together, we can use our power in the voting booth to make health care a priority, and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”
Senator Obama is committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Barack Obama recognizes that nurses play a critical role in every aspect of patient care, and the nursing shortage ranks as one of the most pressing issues facing our health care system. Obama’s health care plan includes expanded funding to improve the primary care and public health practitioner workforce; including loan repayments, improved reimbursement and training grants.
Barack Obama has a history of advocacy for nurses and patients. In the Illinois senate, he helped lead efforts to protect nurses and improve the quality of health care. In the U.S. Senate, he cosponsored the Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act, which limits mandatory overtime for nurses to true emergency situations, and as President, he has promised to sign this important legislation into law.
ANA has been making presidential endorsements since 1984. The endorsement process includes sending a questionnaire on nursing and health care issues to all of the Democratic and Republican candidates, an invitation to all of the democratic and republican candidates for a personal interview and an online survey of ANA’s membership regarding which candidate is most supportive of nursing’s agenda.
The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses through its 54 constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

Bush is a conservative? I agree with hound. The media has done their job on the youth of America and brainwashed them for the last 15 years. Wait till they start taking 50% of your income in taxes and tell you that you make too much money as a nurse, and some of your money should be redistributed to others so they can have better opportunities. Do we have to do go through what Russia did? Socialisim does not work. It just squeezes out the middle class and makes everyone the same......the working poor and big government. Just wait for it. It happens slowly, in degrees...you dont notice at first....and then one day you are Europe, with no civil liberties. Also, socialized medicine means you will make 15 dollars an hour instead of 30-40 an hour.

Me personally.....no.....he has no idea that i exist, but americans as a whole....Yes....I do! Politician or not, he has displayed an interest in our voices like no other president I have seen....so I take that to mean he is concerned about us/me!
Since were obviously going to continue making generalizations.....those who are narrow minded and fixated on old ways of thinking usually don't change so hydranthound you go ahead and continue to have a negative view of youth, people in general, and our country's future and we will just see how you fare with that perspective as it continues. For me and my youthful, innovative, optimistic and creative mind, I will continue to enjoy the positive nature of my mindset and reap the benefits of such.
BTW.....stem cells aren't a result of murder.....just so ya know......that's not the issue here. LOL!

Interesting........stem cells come from a variety of sources.....not just aborted fetuses. There are several articles listed even here on NL that share info about stem cells including huge advancements that have been made using stem cells from grown adults. Ok, so why should this be banned again? If it can help millions of people and stem cells can originate from sources other than embryos and "aborted fetuses".
Where do stem cells come from?
A stem cell is a cell that has the ability to continuously divide and differentiate (develop) into various other kind(s) of cells and tissues. Like a blank microchip that can ultimately be programmed to perform any one of a number of specialized tasks, stem cells are undifferentiated, 'blank' cells that do not yet have a specific physiological function. When the proper conditions occur in the body or in the laboratory, stem cells begin to develop into specialized tissues and organs. Stem cells are also self-sustaining, replicating through cell division.
These unique characteristics are why stem cell research holds such great promise for the treatment of life-threatening and debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer, Parkinson's disease, and juvenile diabetes. Understanding what the genetic and biochemical signs are that trigger stem cell differentiation may allow researchers to one day program new cells to repair damaged tissues and organs, and to better understand disease processes. Here is a current list of the sources of stem cells:
Embryonic stem cells - They are harvested from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst seven to ten days after fertilization.
Fetal stem cells - These cells are taken from the germline tissues that will make up the gonads of aborted fetuses.
Umbilical cord stem cells - Umbilical cord blood contains stem cells similar to those found in bone marrow.
Placenta derived stem cells - Up to ten times as many stem cells can be harvested from a placenta as from cord blood.
Adult stem cells - Many adult tissues contain stem cells that can be isolated. The goals of stem cell research include curing diseases, cloning, and gene-line engineering. Cloning is directed towards making duplicate animals or humans. Gene-line engineering is directed toward permanent change in disease resistance and aesthetic and functional enhancements.

As I've said, the Obama administration is very interested to hear what we have to say......you should share your ideas and views with him.
I may be wrong but I don't recall another president in recent history being so interested in our views. To me, this is what is exciting whether your views are aligned with mine or not. HE WANTS TO HEAR FROM US!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is a great and awesome thing....to have a president that considers our views and not his own bullheaded and skewed attitude.

Hydranthound, you have used some very strong and negative words to describe youth and insinuated that we (youth) are decaying. You're generalizations are stereotypical and do not consider the whole picture of youth today. Your negative perspective is very very sad. I'm sorry that you have such a view. Saying such things will never ever win over youth and bring them to Christ as you have expressed your mission to be.
I'm curious.....would you consider the "youth" fighting in Iraq to be this way......what about the "youth" who help save lives and volunteer their time to help those less fortunate. What about the "youth" that have sacrificed themselves for the well-being of others? This could go on, but I think my point is clear. You shouldn;t make such generalizations.
It's my understanding that a lot of stem cells used are from unused embryos (from fertility clinics..so on and so forth).....in other words these embryos have no parents......would not have parents unless the owner decided to go forth with implantation. The embryos are not fetuses....but yet they might become fetuses. Either way you look at what I have described here........it's not abortion!!!!!
Would you be interested in personally taking on all of the unused embryos.....to have them implanted and then care for all the potential fetuses that they may develop into. Probably not, and even if you were interested or capable.....they do not belong to you.
And, I don't think dmazment and myself are discussing this for assisting dolphins. There is research to support the use of stem cells in helping humans with a variety of ailments.

I think it is wrong for the ANA to endorse ANY candidate.

No matter the disease, it does not justify using a aborted fetus. It is amazing that we care more about saving the dolphin and protecting the seals over human life.

Roe V. Wade = 45 Million Babies executed in 35 years.... Genocide should never have become legal ! Todays advanced ultrasound technology has shown us a 10 week old fetus has facial features, fingers, toes and feels the pain of abortion. Less spoken of is the life altering pain and guilt a misinformed woman feels after she has made this "Choice". ANA should endorse legislation which requires a woman be fully informed about the development of the baby via ultrasound. Some of these (approx. 20%) would have been a blighted ovum or non viable anyway, yet these women also carry the guilt and shame of abortion. Shame on Planned Parenthood and shame on the ANA for having the audacity to represent "us" in endorsing a candidate to further their special interest .

heyarnold47 Mr Obama is not muslim, has never been muslim. His father may have been, but he is not. Have you ever heard the call to prayer? It is very beautiful and if anyone would have a call to resent this it would be the Jews of this country, given the continuous strife between muslims and jews for the last 6000 years.
hydranthound......he is not changing the abortion laws, an all stem cell research because of Bush has been severely restricted. My father died of Parkinson's related illness and just maybe he may be alive today if research had been far less restricted.
