The American Nurses Association Endorses Senator Barack Obama

The American Nurses Association (ANA) announces its endorsement of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) in the 2008 Presidential Election. The ANA represents the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses.
“As President, Barack Obama will bring real change to our health care system,” said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. “Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession by the American people, and we, as a profession, trust that Barack Obama will see that affordable quality health care is made available to everyone.”
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association,” said Sen. Barack Obama. “The nurses of America serve our country tirelessly, and I share their belief that we must bring affordable and accessible health care to all Americans. My plan lowers health care costs for the average American family by up to $2500 and finally makes health care work better for American families than it does for the drug and insurance companies.”
“Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton spoke at ANA’s House of Delegates in June about the need to move forward in unity to bring about real, much needed change to our health care system, and our nurses responded: ‘Yes we can’” Patton added. “Nurses represent the largest group of health care professionals in this country, and working together, we can use our power in the voting booth to make health care a priority, and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”
Senator Obama is committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Barack Obama recognizes that nurses play a critical role in every aspect of patient care, and the nursing shortage ranks as one of the most pressing issues facing our health care system. Obama’s health care plan includes expanded funding to improve the primary care and public health practitioner workforce; including loan repayments, improved reimbursement and training grants.
Barack Obama has a history of advocacy for nurses and patients. In the Illinois senate, he helped lead efforts to protect nurses and improve the quality of health care. In the U.S. Senate, he cosponsored the Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act, which limits mandatory overtime for nurses to true emergency situations, and as President, he has promised to sign this important legislation into law.
ANA has been making presidential endorsements since 1984. The endorsement process includes sending a questionnaire on nursing and health care issues to all of the Democratic and Republican candidates, an invitation to all of the democratic and republican candidates for a personal interview and an online survey of ANA’s membership regarding which candidate is most supportive of nursing’s agenda.
The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million registered nurses through its 54 constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

Barack Obama has the right idea. He is for the people not for the big corporations. We as health care providers have vote. Talking will not help.

I am glad I am not a member of ANA. I would regret having supported any organization that supported a presidential candidate that even spoke the words " socialized medicine" Hello!!! You would be out of job. I am sure that all the Canadian nurses do not come to the USA for the scenery. In socialized medicine, the docs do your jobs!! I have been an RN for 15 years, and worked with nurses from "socialized medicine", but then you would have a good "welfare program" to support the nurses who lost their jobs if obama is elected!

Take a look at www.judicialwatch.com before voting democratic. Of course the republicans are not totally scandal free either. Pass this site on to others so they can truly make an informed vote.

I just finished school as a BSRN. I just started earning my $22 an hr. I owe, I owe, I owe when it comes to tuition loans. I don't want socialized medicine to turn my $22 an hour back to minimum wage. ..............
That is exactly what would happen with socialized medicine. It would take away the motivation for those of us who worked so hard to get through nursing school and become RNs. With the current nursing shortage, removing motivation to become a nurse would mean a greater shortage, which then would lead to lowered standards in order to put more people in place to do the job...which leads to more mistakes.... more nosocomial infections and more injury and deaths due to medical errors.

BTW, right now anyone who needs medical care can walk into any ER and get care for free. So the myth that people can't get medical care is a scare tactic. The solution lies in those of us who are professionals to volunteer one or two hours a week, along with MDs, to open or serve in urgent care clinics to prevent ER visits for things like a toothache or other non-emergencies and thereby provide routine care for everyone, even those who do not have insurance. That way the ERs will stop draining health care dollars and we could still be giving to those less fortunate without resorting to socialized medicine.

Let's also consider the wellbeing of everyone in this country....not just ourselves....when we decide who we are voting for. You should be able to stand in front of the ballot box and honestly say to yourself that this person I have chosen to vote for has ALL Americans' best interest in mind. If you cannot say that.....you might be making the wrong choice!

WeekendWarrior is absolutely right ladies and gents! Both McCain and Obama's healthcare plans are available in full detail on-line if you take the time to look for it.
It is so crucially important that EVERYONE vote. In the end, one side will win hopefully as a result of the choices made by ALL Americans not just a fraction of us (including those who do not have an address). We all deserve to have a quality life in this civilized nation of ours. I happen to think Obama would promote that more so than McCain, but whatever happens I just hope that we as a nation will collectively make the RIGHT choice, and that our next president will be better than this one! I still can't believe he has been in office for eight years. I'm fairly confident with an approval rating soooo LOW that there's very few people left that actually think he has done good for us much less admire him.
On election day for the last two terms, Americans have made the WRONG choice. Conditions here are worse than they have been in a very very long time. Please make sure that you vote, encourage all your friends and family members to vote, your neighbors etc. If you know someone who cannot get to the polling center, please drive them!!!!!!! All Americans have been given a very important power in determining how our lives will be shaped over the next 4 years. Let's make the RIGHT CHOICE this time!!!!

It's quite obvious why Doctor's are for McCain. They make over 250,000 dollars per year. Meanwhile we overworked, underpaid RNs are taxed more on our incomes and take more responsibility. Obama has clearly stated that he plans to reduce taxes on the working population and that is us. Health care should not be the onlyn reason you choose a candidate, but the prospect of being able to keep the money I work hard for and health care reform are just two issues that I agree with Obama on. Hard, working, tax paying, liberal.

Wow. I am shocked. There are more reasons to vote for a president other than just health care isssues. I understand this is a nursing/healthcare forum, but we are voting for a man who will run the counrty for the next 4 years. I agree with AccodionManCMA!

Have to agree with VIXEN007. Maybe the ANA should have polled all of us licensed nurses before they came to their conclusion. They certainly don't speak for me. I am perfectly capable of thinking for myself, thank you very much!!!!!

I am not sure who to vote for but I know the physicians are not for Obama. I would like to have a reimbursement for my loans but I am not sure if it is worth having Obama in the lead chair? Hmmm? What to do? I guess ANA does not really care what their members think they just tell us what think. I am still undecided myself.
