DECATUR – Bob Jelks felt he was called to his latest endeavor by a higher power.
“I knew that God was after me,” he said. “I just knew his hand. He was after me, and I was running and ducking and dodging from him.”
Jelks, a prostate cancer survivor, is well-known around town for his work advocating for men who are dealing with the disease and promoting early detection. Now he’s taking on a new challenge as he completes a 10-week training course at Decatur Memorial Hospital to become a volunteer hospital chaplain.
“I’ve been taking care of men’s physical health, trying to encourage them to stay healthy,” he said. “Now I’m trying to help them take care of their spiritual side of life.”
Jelks said in his 63 years, he’s had “spurts” and “moments” of peace and contentment in his life, but since starting his chaplaincy training, he’s felt more at ease than he has in years. He said he appreciates the chance to help people in some of their most raw and emotional moments.
“I’m a field servant,” he said. “I like being out touching people personally, dealing with them one-on-one.”
The other members of the small class are the Rev. Terry Leach, pastor of Cerro Gordo Brethren Church; Rev. William Mitchell, pastor of First Baptist Church, Stonington; and Phyllis Howley, a current DMH staff chaplain. Under the direction of the Rev. Dan Spruell, manager of pastoral services at DMH, the students learn about skills and topics relevant to hospital chaplains and do four hours of patient visits each week.
Mitchell said one of the most important skills he has practiced so far is active listening.
“We’re asking questions that will help them talk about whatever their situation is right now, with the idea that there’s a spiritual component to their healing as well,” he said.
“We talk a lot about being present in the moment, focusing on the person,” Spruell said.

ive been nursing for overrrr 20 years and recently was hurt in a car accident. I can't work those long shifts and do heavy lifting anymore. I've worked in a number of settings but now have been out of work for about a year. I feel i still have alot to offer. would love to do something like this. I've been ministring for a short while and i know for certain there is a great need for spirital intervention in most cases. How would I find out more.

I can relate to merryd110. There is a spiritual battle going on and we cannot fight it on our own but "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13). Hang in there and find your peace in Him.

I cannot agree more with the comments, and less with the article. As a 20 + year RN with a M.ED, who happens to look good for her age, I have been chewed up and spit out more times than I can count. I strive to be the best, and set an example for others. Pt.s & famlies love me, other nurses get jealous. It is so-so sad to see just how crule and mean-spirted other nurses ( and staff that jumpd on the bandwagon) can be. False rumors, talking negatively about and to me, even sabatoge-- all some of the recent events I had to endure. All agree I have been wronged, yet I cannot get any help. I recently landed in the hospital from the stress & depression with a serious cardiac arrythmia. Way to ypoung for this to be happpening. I am so dismayed at others in our profession right now. Why do the people who are so horrible seem to get ahead & get away with their deplorable behavior? I hope that all these wonderful nurses and medical professionals who posted can continue to believe. I know it is so hard, but we have to. Others will have their day, and the only person who can judge you is God. These horrible others will also be judged by this same power. Hold on, our Pt.s need us--some good have to survive for them. God Bless!

is good to know that someone out there still cares and that God is always ready to help those in need
