NJ Hospital Fined $20K Over Baby's Discarded Corpse

NJ Hospital Fined $20K Over Baby's Discarded Corpse

Newsday

January 29, 2009

RENTON, N.J. – A Jersey City hospital has been fined more than $20,000 for violating state procedures after the remains of a stillborn baby were mistakenly thrown out with its trash several weeks ago.

Christ Hospital was notified of the penalty in a Jan. 20 letter from the state Department of Health and Senior Services.

State officials said the body of Bashere Davon Moyd Jr. was put in the hospital’s morgue after he was stillborn Dec. 21. It was discarded sometime between then and Jan. 2, when a funeral home employee came to pick up the body.

Investigators found the hospital didn’t keep a morgue log book and that officials waited two days to report the missing remains.

The infant’s body has not been found.

If rreal, it's highly unethical, patient still deserve the right of being handled well even after death.

ccioffi, just because an expecting mother looks into abortion doesn't mean much at all, seeing as how an abortion cannot be performed after the first trimester. & stillborn refers to a baby that has died before exiting the mother between mid second trimester & full term. So, obviously the mother decided against an abortion. & any 15 year old expecting a child would look into an abortion. What would you have done at 15? But bottom line is the hospital just tossed away a baby. & then waited to report it. They deserve to dish out the money for the fine & for the family's pain & suffering.

Completely agree w/ bookishfilly & aichausa. There is SO much more info to this story than we can possibly know. Aside from the obvious moral/ethical issues in this case, I kinda wonder about the biohazard risks for all of their "trash"... (yuk!)

what kind of hospital are they running out there? i can't believe that something like this could happen. in my opinion, the person or people who were responsible for this should be digging through the garbage dump until the body is located. it's only morally right. i don't even understand how they could sleep at night knowing that this families child's body was entrusted to their care and that is how they cared for a human baby just before Christmas! i can't imagine... just unbelievable how ignorant and incompetent some people are! i wonder how they would feel if someone did that to a member of their family???

I cannot begin to imagine the pain and grief these parents have had to endure only to have to suffer more knowing their childs body was thrown in the trash! I find it hard to imagine that someone could unknowingly throw into the trash the body of an infant.

Why did the funeral home not come until almost 2 weeks after the death to pick up the infant's body? I think there is more to this story than we are being told.

IF that makes you sick, how about a two thousand dollar fine at a psych hospital for a rape?

Disgusting! Frankly, however, I can believe it. I have heard bad things from most clients I had who were treated there. Sad

It's said that this happened. But I think we should research the facts first. Broken info came around that the mother was looking into alternatives including abortion. Now with that said, is this person intilted to pain & suffering? Tragic situation and it's probably going to be a good case.

20K is not enough of a fine! I'm sorry. Two parents are still grieving over the loss of a newborn infant, and the hospital gets a slap on the wrist for shotty morgue handling?? What is wrong with this picture??

I agree with sap, $20 k is not nearly enough. This baby may have been stillborn, but he did have a mother who loved him and throwing him away with the trash is a tragedy. I am not sure if a fine that small really does any good. Will they learn from this mistake? I do hope so, but only time will tell. Unfortunately, I am sure this will not be the last story we hear that resembles this one.

$20 k is nothing. Stronger measures should have been taken. No excuse for something like this. Maybe thay should have paid 1 million at least. $20k is a slap on the wrist.
