All Nurses Are Leaders
Laura Wisniewski, RN. BS, CIC

7. SUPPORTIVE
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller
Nurses depend on the support of other nurses. This support is demonstrated through teamwork, mentoring and the deeper bonds of friendship. These unique relationships are forged through shared experiences, successes and overcoming challenges.
8. HEROIC
“In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do things with great love.” – Mother Teresa
The literal meaning of the word hero is protector, defender or guardian. To be heroic is having or displaying the character or attributes of a hero such as being extraordinarily bold, altruistic, and determined.
9. INTUITIVE
“It is always with excitement that I wake up in the morning wondering what my intuition will toss up to me, like gifts from the sea.” – Jonas Salk
Intuition is insight or understanding of a situation that cannot be explained logically. It is often described as a “gut feeling”. According to nursing expert Patricia Benner, “Intuition is not the lack of knowledge; rather it is a result of “deep” knowledge.”
10. PURPOSE DRIVEN
“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” – Robert Byrne
According to the American Nurses Association, “Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.” It is difficult to imagine a more significant life purpose than becoming a nurse.

Excellent article. It defines nursing in every aspect of characteristics and qualities. I believe it is a growing and learning process that defines the leadership qualities we achieve.

I believe I am a leader. I always have been since I was little. I never followed. My parents always said, "be a leader not a follower". I just love nursing!

As nurses with a career that has non-delineated as our we need to be constantly aware of our right, responsibilites as a profession. Our leaders need to do more to drive home this fact that we are a licensed profession and that we need to be more visible and taken more seriously as the economy continue to spiral downwards and nurses are forced to do more with less.

This is an awesome article and makes me feel reassured that I will someday reach that point of authority. I am only a student nurse right now but I feel confident that the nursing program is preping me to become such a leader

Good article! Made me remember why I became a nurse 38 years ago, and why I continue to work in the field, ever chasing a new challenge!
