7 Residents, 1 Nurse Die in Nursing Home Shooting

CARTHAGE, N.C. – A gunman barged into a North Carolina nursing home Sunday morning and started “shooting everything,” going room to room in a terrifying rampage that killed seven residents — most in their late 80s — and a nurse who cared for them.

Authorities said Robert Stewart also wounded three others, including the Carthage police officer who confronted him in a hallway of Pinelake Health and Rehab and stopped the brutal attack. Officials said the massacre could have been bloodier if the officer had not managed to subdue Stewart.

“He acted in nothing short of a heroic way today, and but for his actions, we certainly could have had a worse tragedy,” said Moore County District Attorney Maureen Krueger. “We had an officer, a well-trained officer, who performed his job the way he was supposed to and prevented this from getting even worse than it is now.”

By late Sunday afternoon, Krueger had charged Stewart, 45, of Moore County, with eight counts of first-degree murder and a single charge of felony assault of a law enforcement officer. Authorities offered few other details, allowing only that Stewart was not a patient or an employee at the nursing home and isn’t believed to be related to any of the victims.

Authorities said they would release more information at a news conference Monday morning.

“I don’t know if the emotion entirely has set in,” said Police Chief Chris McKenzie, a Carthage native who said nothing in his nearly 20-year law enforcement career compared to Sunday’s slaughter. “It’s a small community built on faith, and faith will get us through.”

While authorities declined to comment on a possible motive, Stewart’s ex-wife said he had been reaching out recently to family members, telling them he had cancer and was preparing for a long trip and to “go away.” Sue Griffin said she was married to Stewart for 15 years, and while they hadn’t spoken since divorcing in 2001, he had been trying to call her during the past week through her son, mother, sister and grandmother.

Griffin said Stewart had once been a painter. She said she had no idea whether her ex-husband was somehow connected to the nursing home or why he would shoot people there.

“He did have some violent tendencies from time to time,” Griffin said. “I wouldn’t put it past him. I hate to say it, but it is true.”

Authorities said Stewart began his rampage around 10 a.m. at Pinelake Health and Rehab in the North Carolina Sandhills about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh, firing shots inside and outside the home. It ended when 25-year-old Officer Justin Garner traded gunfire with Stewart in a hallway, wounding the suspect.

“He just comes in and just starts shooting everything around,” said Sen. Harris Blake, of Moore County, relating the story told by sheriff’s officials.

This is a horrable stunt to target these dependent citizens of the USA. My every prayer goes out to all involved. We need to enforce our dependent population better. The monster that did this to the people needs to be made to go in front of a firing squad and see how jt feels to not be able to protect themselves. I congradulate the staff for getting help ther quickly to prevent further deaths. God Bless all involved!

My heart and prayers goes out to the residents and their families. There is no excuse for anyone having to die that day. Just a shame that someone so heartless and go into a nursing home and kill and injure innocent people like the way he did. May God be with each and every resident, nurse, and officer that responded to the call, and their families.

These small remote nuring home facilities require 24 hour security to prevent this terrible tragedy from happening again. The home needs to enfoce some type of list as to whom is allowed to visit their love ones. If this persons name was not on the list and they found that out, police officers could have been notified asap and perhaps some of these people could have been spared. My deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and families of the deceased. May God send them to his heavenly body.

Why? What did these folks do to him that was so bad that he had to take their lives? What happens to our past if we keep killing it off? Life is precious no matter what the age is. What is the world coming to when you can't even feel safe in your own home. and this was their home! The nurse and officer that tried to save lives is true heroes! My God be with the families!

there needs to be more security in health care facilities its terrible that this happened an I pray for the families of the victims of the shooting its is horrible to hear that this has happened but hopefully it will make the facilities/hospitals and dependency centers more aware of the security deficits that they face, and the states will mandate higher security measures.and provide a more secure environment to residents and there clients/residents

here these people are basically in their home just waiting until their life ends. and in comes this guy in an outrage and shoots them. it's awful.stupidity.and he is alive ,so we will have to keep him up while he has his stay in prison.WHY? now these families have lost their loved ones and everything is o.k. ? people don't believe things when you say satan is on the move. this world and all of it's counterfeit goodness is what is wrong. this man, looking to kill his wife for whatever the reason , lost his mind and did damage that cannot be forgotten.
i hate this whole thing happened. i myself am a CNA and i love the elderly . it takes a crazy man or a demon to do what he did. the children and elderly are God's most loved. just makes no sense.

My prayers and sympathies to all the families and staff. I used to work as a nurse in a nursing home and was always worried about the residents and staff's safety. I stopped working as a nurse because of abusive family members, residents acting out hurting the staff, administrators not wanting to pay for extra training for the staff dealing with dementia.
    God bless

This is so heart wrenching. I work in a nursing home at night and months ago when it was known that people were breaking into nursing homes and stealing drugs we had to begin to lock doors at night. This is strictly a security measure but it makes you wonder where is it safe anymore?
