Destiny Leads Young Woman to Become Yoga Nurse
Jannette Pippin, The Daily News of Jacksonville
May 19, 2009
She dedicated herself to using yoga for therapeutic purposes after attending training in 1996 given by Deepak Chopra, a leader in the field of mind-body medicine. He was teaching the traditional medical establishment — a therapeutic/medical yoga.
She returned to college and graduated as a registered nurse at age 51.
Hockey played a part in deciding where she’d use her training.
Tersigni, who lives in Emerald Isle, said she had a job opportunity at Duke Medical Center.
The Carolina Hurricanes were playing the heavily favored Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2002 Eastern Conference finals at the time. Tersigni, who was in Toronto, let the players determine whether she’d stay or go.
“I basically spoke to God and said … I’m going to go with the winning team so if the Hurricanes win I’ll go to North Carolina. If they lose I’ll stay in Toronto,” Tersigni said with a laugh.
The Hurricanes won, and Tersigni headed south.
Tersigni said yoga is beneficial for everybody. The gentle postures, deep breathing and meditation help the central nervous system and the immune system and slows down the heart rate, increases cardiovascular efficiency, muscle flexibility and joint range of motion, among other benefits.
Tersigni hopes to teach other nurses how to use yoga as therapy.

I would like to hear more about how she integrated nursing and yoga and what kind of facility she does this for. I am already a nurse and would be very happy integrating yoga into my therapeutic practice.

Great! As a burnt out nurse I too am seeking a new way to utilize my profession without going back to the hospital and its politics. Nursing is hardly about the patient anymore and I just can't give substandard care. I am hoping to find something that helps people to deal with the stress that is so pervasive in this society and a way to show them, especially nurses, that life can be beautiful if we just slow our pace. and take better care of our own needs. Blessings.
