President Barack Obama is spreading disinformation about health care almost as quickly as he's driving up the national debt, such as that 47 million Americans can't get health care and that a government takeover would be a panacea. Democrats have constantly demagogued the 47 million uninsured figure to gin up public fear about the scarcity of health care access, especially for the poor. They follow up with the promise that under their plan, we would achieve universal access. But both are untrue. In "The Top Ten Myths of American Health Care," Sally Pipes points out that while there are some Americans who simply can't afford health insurance, many millions who can afford insurance choose not to buy it and "very likely would not want to be 'rescued' by mandatory socialized medicine."

You're absolutely right, cynccrn! Watching the town hall coverage makes me crazy! I don't understand how these "protesters" think. The insurance industry rations care...they are in business solely to make a profit, which they do by denying coverage and claims payments. What percentage of the premiums paid goes towards administration and multimillion dollar salaries for the CEO's? Why would anyone support the status quo? The same stink was made about Social Security & Medicare, almost word for word, back when they were originally proposed. Those programs have been in existence for decades and the country is still standing. I'd like to know how many "protesters" are on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, how many of them were fine with the government getting involved in the Terri Schiavo case, and how many of them would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned? If you believe healthcare decisions should be between the doctor & patient, then you have to apply that to all situations and procedures across the board. Did anyone happen to see the footage of the mobile medical unit set up in Los Angeles last week? They normally just service 3rd world countries but are now also working here in this country! The crowd that showed up for free medical care was enormous. Let's put an end to the hypocrisy and ideological talking points and do what's right...what every other civilized nation has done for decades...and take care of our citizens.

I get a little irritated over individuals commenting on things they obviously know nothing about. As a critical care nurse for many years now, we Americans are already paying for those uninsured Americans. Furthermore, Sally Pipes needs to spend some more time researching health care. Her comments on emergency room services appears to leave out the fact that emergency rooms cannot refuse to treat people based on their ability to pay. Who do you think foots that bill? The American taxpayers. Lets face it, the America has the most expensive health care system in the world, and when compared to countries who have some form of National health care system, the U.S. health care system has significantly poorer patient outcomes. If you really want to know the truth about the U.S. health care system perhaps Americans should read a few books such as; To err is human: Institute of Medicine;Crossing the Quality Chasm: Institute of Medicine; and Delivering Health Care in America: Shi & Singh. Oh and any book that deals with the topic of social justice. Bottom line, as long as Americans refuse to acknowledge the problems with their health care system, the cost of health care is going to continue to sky rocket until only the extremely wealthy are going to be able to afford health care, and interestingly enough these are the people who can afford to pay for their health care without the assistance of an insurance company.
