Is it Cheaper to Be Vegan, Vegetarian, or a Meat Eater?

Siobahn O'Connor | GOOD

Diet

Here’s an interesting chart from LearnVest that breaks down the daily costs, in dollars and cents, of different diets: meat eaters, pescetarians, vegetarians, and vegans. According to their tallying, vegans have the least expensive diets, and meat eaters have the priciest, which certainly flies in the face of the arguments that vegetarianism is a choice limited to the hippie fringes and the bourgeoisie.

I like the message, but I take issue with some of the numbers. For instance, I don’t know where they are getting their yogurt, and I know New York is expensive and everything, but I can’t find a single serving of healthy yogurt for 80 cents anywhere I do my groceries, and a tuna cheddar melt for just over a buck seems unrealistic. There are a few other prices that had me scratching my head, but overall this is an interesting look at food prices that goes against the conventional wisdom that healthier, and more vegetarian diets necessarily cost more.

Sams Club also sells Yoplait which is in a larger 6 ounce serving size compared to the 4 ounce serving size of the Dannon Activia. The Yoplait has a per yogurt cup price of $0.48. It is in an 18 pack available for either light or regular for $8.59. Since i live in IL it may be priced different in NY city especially since I heard the NY is considered the most expensive city to live in, but if there is a Sams Club near you try to see if you can get a comparable deal on the yogurt. You can get prices for your local club online by searching using your zip code for the nearest one and you do not need a membership to use the pharmacy or the cafe just tell the greeters that you are using the pharmacy or the cafe

I can get yogurt for as low as $0.44 cents each by buying it in my local Sams Club in bulk it is Activia it is 10.61 after tax and it happens to be almost half of $0.80 they quoted per yogurt. It also happens to be the cheapest yogurt per individual serving cup.

I wonder where the price quotes came from, blueberries cost in NY about 3-4 dollars for eight ounces. Hummus cost more than 1.70, I recently tried to buy some at a supermarket and it was $4 for 6 ounces! tomato are 1.99 a pound, mozz cheese is about $3.50- 5.00 depending on size of package. You need to meet a quota of protein whether vegan or flesh eater per day, and sorry it costs about the same!
